Multiple @UIC_XCTF Victories Highlight Heenan Invitational

UIC collects four event victories in meet at North Central College

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Four UIC student-athletes collected event victories Friday evening, while 20 additional Flames posted top-10 placements at the Pat Heenan Invitational hosted by North Central College in nearby Naperville, Ill.

Two victories came for both the men's and women's squads Friday. Tobi Alabi won the men's triple jump, while Alex Bashqawi topped the field in the men's 800-meter run. Peyton Wade continued her dominant run in the women's high jump with her third victory in four meets and Allison Hansen won the 5K by more than 46 seconds.

Men's Team Highlights
  • Alabi's third attempt in the triple jump produced a mark of 14.13 meters. It marked his third top-four finish in the event during this indoor season. The Hinsdale, Ill., native also earned points in the high jump Friday with an eighth-place finish with a mark of 1.91 meters. That was his second-best mark in that event this season.
  • Freshman Bryan Keubeng posted two top-five finishes at the Pat Heenan Invitational. The Plainfield, Ill., product placed third in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 6.64 meters. He also took fifth in the high jump Friday with 1.91 meters.
  • On the track, Bashqawi ran the 800-meter event in 1:55.14 to win the race. Josh English was close behind Bashqawi in the 800, crossing the line in 1:56.42, a personal-best time.
  • At half that distance, UIC collected boasted three of the top-five finishers in the men's 400-meter dash. Michael Meskill was the quickest of the trio, finishing third in 51.03. Conner Kiley was just behind in 51.04 to take fourth and Jakob Mogorovic clocked the fifth-fastest time in 51.15 seconds. Kiley also ran sixth overall in the 200-meter dash in 23.08 seconds.
  • Joseph Otchere nearly collected another victory for the Flames in the 60-meter dash. His time of 7.09 seconds was good for second place on Friday.
  • Sophomore Martin Skucas took fifth in the mile in 4:26.85 and classmate Carlos Cabrera ran a PR and finished in 10th place in the 5K in 15:18.91.
Women's Team Highlights
  • As noted above, Wade won the high jump for the third time in four indoor meets this season. She posted a victory at 1.72 meters on Friday.
  • Hansen cruised to a triumph in the 5K in a time of 17:58.54. The second-place finisher crossed in 18:45.89. Coming in fourth in the 5K was UIC freshman Sylvia Waz. She posted a PR in 19:11.78.
  • Ai Kaisho had the third-fastest time in the 3K at the Pat Heenan Invitational. The junior checked in at 10:23.37.
  • The Flames had two of the top eight placements in the women's mile with strong showings by a pair of newcomers. Teresa Mejia claimed fifth place in 5:21.12, while Lexi Weltin was eighth in 5:32.88. Those times marked personal bests for both UIC runners.
  • Kayla Isom finished fifth Friday in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.27 and Janine Fajardo ran the 60-meter hurdle race in 9.62 seconds, placing sixth overall. Prevail Bonga had a top-10 time in the 60-meter dash in 9.00 seconds.
  • In other field events, Genora Garcia placed third in the shot put with a mark of 12.72 meters and Ann Mikulecky claimed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 3.20 meters.
The Flames have one final weekend to tune up for the Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships. Next Saturday, Feb. 16 several Flames will travel to Notre Dame for the second time this season for the Alex Wilson Invitational. Others are currently scheduled to visit University of Chicago for the Margaret Bradley Invitational.
