Hanlon Tabs No-Hitter vs. Rider; Flames Defeated by No. 8 Tennessee

Flames run rule Rider 17-0, fall 11-1 to Tennessee

CONWAY, S.C. – The UIC softball team (2-2) was back in action at the Kickin' Chicken Classic on Saturday, ending the day with one win and one loss. The Flames posted an impressive 17-0 (5) run-rule victory over Rider (0-3) before taking an 11-1 (5) loss to No. 8 Tennessee (3-0).

Sophomore Marley Hanlon took home the first no-hitter of her career against the Broncs after a shut-down performance in the circle. Just one Rider batter reached on an error in the near-perfect performance, as the Flames took home their second win in the tournament.

Game Highlights vs. Rider
  • Lexi Watts led off the game with a bunt and stole second. Cassie Kaelber followed with an infield single, and the duo stole second and third to put two runners in scoring position. Skylee James doubled, scoring them both, and Tara McElligott followed with her first home run as a Flame to make it 4-0. Alyssa Griman followed suit with a solo shot, giving the Flames a 5-0 lead after their first at bat.
  • It was back to the top of the lineup in the second, with Watts once again reaching, stealing second and making it to third on a wild pitch. Kaelber drew a walk and stole second, and a sacrifice fly from James plated Watts, 6-0. Kayla Wedl reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second, and McElligott came through again, smacking a double to left to score Kaelber and Wedl, 8-0. McElligott advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Griman single. Claire Crane joined in with a double, moving Griman to third, and Emily Wetzel drove in both with the inning's third double, 11-0.
  • The Flames batted around in the second, and after a pitching change, Watts tallied an infield single to put runners on the corners for Kaelber, who singled and scored Wetzel. James doubled to score Kaelber and Watts, putting the lead at 14 after two innings.
  • Watts got things started again for the Flames in the fourth, singling to center. Kaelber followed with another single to the middle of the outfield, and James knocked another single to score Watts. Wedl grounded out, but allowed Kaelber to score, and McElligott singled to the infield to bring James across the plate, 17-0.
Facts & Figures vs. Rider
  • Despite a large cushion provided by her offense, Hanlon was near flawless in her first career no-no, facing just 16 batters in five innings of work. The southpaw's no-hitter was the 28th all-time and first for UIC since Elaine Heflin's no-hit performance against Youngstown State on April 8, 2017.
  • UIC's offense was firing on all cylinders, tallying 20 hits, just one hit shy of the program single-game record. All but two Flames registered a hit in the win.
  • Watts, Kaelber, James, McElligott and Griman all had multi-hit showings, led by a perfect 4-for-4 performance from Watts.  Kaelber, James, McElligott and Griman all ended the morning with three hits apiece.
  • The Flames hit five doubles in the win, along with two home runs, including the first career bomb for McElligott. UIC also swiped six bases in the win, three by Watts, two by Kaelber and one by James.
  • Jasmine Willis, Kayla Pociejewski, Crane and Wetzel made up UIC's other tallies.
  Game Highlights vs. Tennessee
  • Tennessee loaded the bases in the top of the first with two singles and a hit-by-pitch, and the next batter walked, allowing the Lady Vols to score first. Another run crossed the plate on a fielder's choice, and two more crossed the plate after a single and another walk, 4-0.
  • Watts drew a walk to start the bottom of the second, and advanced to second on sacrifice bunt from Kaelber. James tapped an infield single, but Wedl and McElligott were retired to end the opportunity for the Flames.
  • Griman rattled off her second homer of the day to leadoff the second for UIC, but the next three Flames went down in order.
  • A three-run homer in the top of the third put the Lady Vols ahead 7-1, and three more singles and a double steal extended their lead to eight, 9-1.
  • Four more hits brought across two more runs for Tennessee in the top of the fifth, 11-1.
  • The Flames loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a pair of fielders' choice in the bottom of the fifth, but the Tennessee defense held strong and got out of the jam.
Facts & Figures vs. Tennessee
  • The Flames were outhit 12-6 in the loss, with James and Kaelber combining for four of UIC's six hits. Griman's homer to lead off the second was her sole hit of the day, while Wetzel also ended the day with one hit.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start and pitched 2.0 innings, allowing seven runs off four hits while striking out a pair to take the loss. Hanlon came on in relief and saw 3.0 innings of work, giving up four runs off eight hits and striking out three.
