Baddeley, Flames Top Illinois State

Flames Sophomore Won Vault as Team Stays Hot

Kayla Baddeley and Serena Baker each won an event, Alisa Sheremeta had the second-highest score in two events, and Mikailla Northern turned in a solid all-around performance as UIC defeated Illinois State, 194.700-193.525 Saturday afternoon.  Though the Flames fell short of achieving 195 points for the fourth straight meet, they still recorded their fifth straight first place finish and moved to 2-0 in meets against Midwest Independent Conference competition.

"We earned another victory with a lot of performances worth mentioning," co-head coach Peter Jansson said, "including Maddie Nowak and Riley Mahoney who both had outstanding vaults.  Kayla Baddeley looked very strong as well on floor and vault.  On bars and beam, the team had to show their strength by coming back from an early fall in the lineup and making sure they hit the rest of their routines.  But overall it was another strong meet."

Rotation 1 – Bars
  • Serena Baker scored 9.800 and tied for first place, marking her third bars title of the season and second in a row.
  • Sabrina Tomassini had a season high 9.775, the second highest score of the meet.
  • Alisa Sheremeta was next for the Flames, scoring 9.700 to take sixth place.
Rotation 2 – Vault
  • Two Flames tied for first place on vault.  Riley Mahoney and Kayla Baddeley each scored 9.825.  It was the second vault win of the season for each.
  • Maddie Nowak tied for third with a score of 9.725.
  • Miki Northern and Allison Broad contributed to the team score of 48.700 with vaults of 9.675 and 9.650, respectively.
Rotation 3 – Floor
  • Sheremeta scored 9.800 and tied for second.
  • Northern was right behind her teammate, placing fourth with a 9.775.
  • Abby Hasanov and Ashley Albrecht each scored 9.725 or higher to help the Flames reach their highest total of the meet, 48.750.
Rotation 4 – Beam
  • Illinois State had the top two beam routines.  Sheremeta tied for third by five-hundredths from one judge with a 9.775.
  • The rest of the team's four counting scores fell in line behind Sheremeta as the Flames closed with a strong enough performance to keep the Redbirds at bay.
  • Dani Maciel and Northern each scored 9.750.  Baddeley and Jenna Squillo followed closely.
All-Around
  • Northern was the team's only all-around competitor.
  • She finished second to Gabrielle Cooke, 38.875-38.850.
Up Next
  • The Flames will begin a two week homestand next weekend.  Those meets will be the last home meets of the season.
  • First up is another MIC foe, Southeast Missouri, next Sunday at 3pm at the UIC Dorin Forum.
