Flames Drop Two to Lipscomb in Day One of Belmont Invitational

UIC falls 7-3 in game one; 2-1 in game two

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UIC softball team (5-13) was handed a pair of losses in day one of the Belmont Invitational, falling in both games of a doubleheader against Lipscomb (17-7-1). The Flames were defeated 7-3 in game one and came up short in game two, 2-1.

Game One Highlights
  • Lipscomb scored first, grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the third off a two-run homer.
  • The Lady Bisons loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with a pair of walks and a fielder's choice. A double to the right-field wall scored a pair, and two more came across the plate after an error and a tricky double steal, 6-0.
  • A Lexi Watts bunt, Skylee James walk and Kayla Wedl single loaded the bases for Alyssa Griman's sacrifice fly, which scored Watts, 6-1.
  • Lipscomb added on another run in the top of the sixth with two walks and a single, extending its lead to six, 7-1.
  • James led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, and Wedl followed with a double to bring her in, 7-2. Wedl moved on to third on a wild pitch and scored on a deep sac fly to center off the bat of Tara McElligott, 7-3.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • The Flames outhit the Lady Bisons 7-6. Lexi Watts and Kayla Wedl both had a pair of hits, while Cassie Kaelber, James and Emily Wetzel each had one.
  • Wedl, Griman and McElligott made up UIC's three RBIs.
  • Allie Trudeau pitched the duration, allowing five earned runs off six hits while striking out four.
Game Two Highlights
  • Lipscomb's leadoff walk came around to score after two groundouts and a UIC error, giving them a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Flames responded in their next at bat, as Watts walked and came around to score on the James double, tying the game at one.
  • The Lady Bisons broke the tie for good in the bottom of the sixth with a walk and a double, 2-1.
Game Two Facts & Figures
  • UIC once again outhit Lipscomb in game two, 6-3. James led with two, while Watts, Wedl Griman and Kaelber made up UIC's remaining tallies. James also took credit for the lone RBI.
  • Trudeau got the start and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run off just one hit while striking out three. Karissa Frazier came on to pitch the final inning, allowing two hits and striking out one.
