The Flames were dominant on vault and floor in their regular season-closing quad meet at Michigan State with Ball State and Alaska-Anchorage Sunday afternoon. UIC turned in the highest team totals of the meet on both events. However, subpar scores on bars and beam brought their final score down to 194.325, placing them third and snapping the team's 10-meet winning streak.
"Floor and vault went exceptionally well," co-head coach
Peter Jansson said. "Beam was a little rough, but the scoring on beam was pretty tough from the beginning, setting up a little different energy level." Only five gymnasts in the entire meet scored as high as 9.725 on beam. "The hardest thing to swallow, though, was that we went to bars with the meet in our hands and really had a subpar bars performance compared to what they are capable of. However, some of these mistakes will keep us sharp going into conference, and if we were going to have a little glitch, best for it to be today."
Serena Baker was the bars champion. It was her seventh win in 12 meets this season.
Kayla Baddeley took second on beam and third on vault. Miki Northern and
Alisa Sheremeta tied for second on floor. All four gymnasts will be among the favorites in their respective events next week at the MIC Championships.
Rotation 1 – Beam
- Kayla Baddeley paced the team with a 9.825. It was her third straight score at least that high, and her fifth of the season. She was second overall.
- Scores were uncharacteristically low through the rest of the lineup. Dani Maciel and Miki Northern tied for the Flames' next highest score with a 9.600 each.
- Alisa Sheremeta's 9.550 and Jenna Squillo's 9.500 rounded out the team total.
Rotation 2 – Floor
- Northern and Sheremeta, the MIC's top two performers on floor, shined in the second rotation. Each scored 9.875, earning a 9.9 from one judge. They were in a four-way tie for second.
- Baddeley was almost as spectacular, finishing just a hair behind them with a 9.850. That matched her career high, set last week.
- Ashley Albrecht returned to the 9.8 threshold, scoring 9.800 and placing tenth.
Rotation 3 – Vault
- Baddeley and Riley Mahoney each vaulted to a 9.800 score. That was the second best score of the meet, and they tied for third.
- Allison Broad set a season high with a 9.775. That was good for seventh place.
- Northern was close behind, scoring 9.750.
- The team's total (48.850) tied their second highest output of the season.
Rotation 4 – Bars
- Serena Baker scored 9.850 for the third straight meet. Her team-high score placed her first, in a tie with two Spartans.
- Northern turned in a top-seven routine worth 9.775.
- Toni Alicke scored 9.750, but the rest of the Flames were at or under 9.6, depressing the team total. After starting the rotation 0.325 out of first place, the Flames posted a 48.225. A score of 48.900 would have given UIC the win - a score they had surpassed in each of the last four meets.
All-Around
- Northern hit 39 on the nose, marking her seventh total of 39 or higher. She was second behind Lea Mitchell's 39.275 for Michigan State.
- Baddeley's 8.225 on bars kept her all-around score low, at 37.700.
Up Next
- The Flames will turn their attention to the Midwest Independent Conference championships.
- The meet will take place Friday night, hosted by Centenary.
