Flames Split Day One at San Diego Classic

UIC defeats Long Beach State; loses offensive battle with SDSU

SAN DIEGO – The UIC softball team (3-9) finished day one of the San Diego Classic with one win and one loss, defeating Long Beach State (7-9) 8-2 to snap a seven-game skid before falling 13-8 to co-host San Diego State (10-7) in the nightcap. The Flames and Aztecs combined for an eye-popping 32 hits in the day one finale, as the back-and-forth offensive battle ended in favor of the home team.

Game Highlights vs. Long Beach State
  • Claire Crane, Emily Wetzel, Lexi Watts and Schyler Ek showed their patience at the plate in the top of the third, drawing four-straight walks with one out to allow the Flames to score first, 1-0. Skylee James put a sacrifice fly out to left to score Wetzel, and Kayla Wedl followed with a single to bring in Watts, 3-0. Tara McElligott stepped up to the plate next and doubled to center, bringing around Ek and Wedl, 5-0.
  • Long Beach State got on the board in its half of the third, scoring two off a pair of doubles and a single, 5-2.
  • The next three innings were quiet until the Flames came up to bat in the seventh, loading the bases off a Wetzel single, Watts bunt and Ek walk. James batted a single up the middle to score Wetzel and Watts, extending UIC's lead to five, 7-2. McElligott tacked on one more with another sacrifice fly out to left to score Ek, giving the Flames an 8-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
  • The Beach threatened with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, but Allie Trudeau handled a grounder to the circle to end the game in favor of UIC, 8-2.
Facts & Figures vs. Long Beach State
  • UIC finished the game with six hits, compared to eight for Long Beach State. Wedl was the lone Flame with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 in the win. Watts, James, McElligott and Wetzel made up UIC's four remaining hits.
  • The Flames showed great patience at the plate, drawing nine walks off the Beach's staff. Watts, Ek and Crane led the way with two walks apiece.
  • Trudeau got the start and pitched the duration, allowing just two runs off eight hits and striking out three in her second complete game of the season.
Game Highlights vs. San Diego State
  • San Diego State put up three runs in its first at bat off three hits and a UIC throwing error for an early 3-0 lead.
  • The Flames got to work in the bottom of the second, as Wedl led off with a single to third base, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved on to third on a single from McElligott. Alyssa Griman grounded out to third to score Wedl, and Kayla Pociejewski followed with a single to shortstop to put runners on the corners. Wetzel singled to plate McElligott, and Watts drew a walk to load the bases. Back-to-back Aztec errors scored three more Flames, allowing UIC to take over the lead, 5-3.
  • The Aztecs scored two in the bottom of the second off a pair of singles and a UIC error to come within one, 5-4.
  • SDSU tied the game at five in the bottom of the third with two hits and two fielders' choice.
  • UIC broke the tie in its next at bat, as Watts singled and James put one through the left side for Wedl, who singled to score Watts, 6-5.
  • San Diego State reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together five singles for two runs, 7-6.
  • Jasmine Willis stepped in to pinch hit for UIC in the top of the fifth and sent one over the left-field wall, tying the game at seven.
  • The Aztecs broke the tie again in the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and a UIC error, 8-7. A single and a walk loaded the bases, and another single drove in two, 10-7. Three more singles brought in three more runs, giving the home team a 13-7 lead at the end of the fifth.
  • Crane led off the top of the seventh with her first homer of the season to add one for the Flames, 13-8, but that was all the Flames would get in their final at bat.
Facts & Figures vs. San Diego State
  • The Aztec's outhit the Flames 18-14 in the nightcap. Watts and James paced the Flames with three hits each, while Wedl and Wetzel also ended the night with multi-hit showings. McElligott, Pociejewski Willis and Crane all tallied one hit apiece.
  • Willis and Crane both recorded their first homers of the season in the loss.
  • Karissa Frazier started in the circle and gave up seven runs off 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Marley Hanlon came on in the fourth and gave up three runs off four hits to take the loss, and Trudeau pitched the final two innings, allowing another three runs off four hits.
