UIC Rallies to Defeat NIU, 8-3

Scott Ota and Ryan Hampe each post three RBI for Flames

CHICAGO -- UIC scored first, but trailed by a run after five innings before the offense kicked it in gear and scored six times in the sixth and seventh innings to knock off the Northern Illinois Huskies, 8-3.

Senior Scott Ota clubbed a game-high three hits, while he and freshman Ryan Hampe each drove in three runs to lead the way for UIC (8-11). Four different players had at least two hits for the Flames.

NIU (7-17) scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning. The relief trio of Fred Gosbeth, Ryan O'Reilly and Alex Padilla shut the Huskies down over the final 4.0 innings to help the Flames secure the win over an in-state rival.

How It Happened
  • After being held hitless the first time through the order, the Flames broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt Bottcher began the frame with a base hit and two batters later he scored when Scott Ota singled to center field. Ota would later score when David Becker put down a sacrifice bunt.
  • The Huskies retaliated with three runs to take the lead in the top of the fifth. Brendan Joyce plated a pair with a single and Nick Drobushevich brought in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
  • UIC jumped back in front with a four-run output in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bottcher walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Ota then muscled another base hit to center, scoring Bottcher form second base. After Thomas Smart doubled to give the Flames two men in scoring position, freshman Ryan Hampe rifled a double down the line in left field to bring both home and give the Flames a 5-3 lead. UIC added one more run in the frame when Dominic Smith drew a base on balls with the bases loaded.
  • The top of the lineup helped produce another pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Lin-Peistrup doubled and scored with easy when Ota flipped another base hit up the middle. After stealing second base, Ota scored on an RBI single off the bat of Hampe.
Notable
  • Noah Masa made his final appearance in a Flames uniform Tuesday. The pitcher, who will undergo career-ending surgery on his arm next week, entered the game as a pinch runner in the bottom of the eighth. He showed off his wheels by going from first-to-third on a double by Ryan Lin-Peistrup, but was later cut down try to tag up and score on a fly ball to center field, despite an acrobatic dive at the dish.
  • Lane Cobb made his UIC debut as a defensive replacement behind the plate in the top of the ninth inning.
