Flames Slug Past Milwaukee, 10-4

UIC picks up fifth Horizon League victory

CHICAGO — UIC scored twice in the first inning and seven more times in an explosive second stanza to build an early lead that it would maintain in a 10-4 win over Milwaukee at Henry Aaron Field.

Scott Ota homered twice on the day for the Flames (9-11, 5-2 HL) and David Becker uncorked a three-run blast In the second inning. Thomas Smart collected three of UIC's 10 hits.

Jacob Key went 7.1 innings to secure his third win in as many conference games. Ryan O'Reilly got the final five outs, including a huge double play that ended a Milwaukee threat in the eighth.

How It Happened
  • UIC's offense provided some early pop on Friday afternoon. With two outs in the top of the first, Scott Ota took the second pitch he saw from Milwaukee's Mike Edwards over the fence in right field for the game's first tally. The Flames did not stop there, however. Three consecutive singles from Ryan Hampe, Thomas Smart and Derrick Patrick led to a run with Patrick's infield hit allowing to Hampe to score and make it 2-0.
  • Starting pitcher Jacob Key put the Panthers away in the bottom of the first before UIC added seven more runs to its lead in second. There were three extra-base hits in the frame with doubles from Alex Dee and Ryan Lin-Peistrup and three-run home run from third baseman David Becker. In addition to Becker's blast, Lin-Peistrup, Hampe and Smart (2) all drove in runs during the inning that was extended with a Milwaukee error.
  • The Panthers used the long ball to push across three runs with a pair of homers in the bottom of the second. Milwaukee added another run in the fourth inning to continue to chip away at the deficit and pull within five runs.
  • Following 7.1 innings from starter Jacob Key, the Flames turned it over to the bullpen. Milwaukee walked thee times to load the bases, but Ryan O'Reilly came on in relief of Sam Menegat to get a 6-4-3 double play turned by Lin-Peistrup, Matt Bottcher and Dee to end the threat and the inning.
  • Protecting a five-run lead to begin the ninth inning, Ota helped the Flames add to their total with a second solo home run. O'Reilly got three quick outs to end the end the game and send UIC into the win column with a 10-4 victory.
