CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (11-14) held off city-rival Loyola (16-10) on Tuesday afternoon at home inside Flames Field, 2-1. UIC scored a run in the first and fourth innings, while keeping the Ramblers without a run until their final at bat to earn its fourth-straight win. Starter
Jennah Speth pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in the circle for the Flames, keeping Loyola at bay with just four hits.
Game Highlights
- The Flames got one run across in their first at bat, as Lexi Watts got the game started with an infield single and advanced to third on a steal and an error. Tara McElligott brought her in with a single up the middle, putting UIC ahead 1-0.
- UIC's second run of the day came in the bottom of the fourth, as Kayla Wedl put a one-out double into the hole in left center and Alyssa Griman walked to put runners on one and two. Cassie Kaelber also found the hole in left center to bring in Wedl, 2-0.
- The Ramblers threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but reliever Marley Hanlon forced a groundout to first base to get the Flames out of the inning.
- Loyola was able to get one across in their final at bat with a bunt, a single and a fielder's choice, but a grounder to second was handled easily and thrown to first to end the inning, and the game, in favor of the Flames.
Facts & Figures
- Loyola recorded more hits despite taking the loss, 6-4. Watts, McElligott, Wedl and Kaelber made up UIC's four tabs.
- Speth comes away from her first start of the year with her first win. Hanlon earned her first save of the year after allowing one run off two hits in 1.2 innings of relief.
