Inclement Weather Shortens Big Blue Classic

Rainy and cold conditions in Charleston put an end to season opener

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- UIC's first scheduled meet of the outdoor season was rendered incomplete on Saturday afternoon as cold and wet conditions at Eastern Illinois prompted meet officials to cancel the remainder of the Big Blue Classic before all of the events could be wrapped up.

The two-day affair began on Friday night with multiple strong showings for the Flames. The women's 5K saw two UIC student-athletes run in the top five. Senior Allison Hansen ran fourth in 18:06.56, just ahead of teammate Ai Kaisho, who ran fifth in 18:18.91. Also on the track Friday, In the men's 400-meter hurdles, veteran Jakob Mogorovic was third overall in 55.49.

Shaun Wollenweber picked up where he left off during the indoor season with a second-place finish in the men's long jump.at 6.70 meters. On Saturday, he qualified for the finals in the 100-meter dash with a preliminary time of 10.99 seconds, but the final heat fell victim to the weather.

On Saturday, Hansen also ran the 1,500 meter race, which would end up being the final event on the track. She finished second in her section and third overall with a time of 5:01.45. Kaisho was also in the top 10, ninth overall, in that event in 5:15.37. Just prior, in the men's 1,500-meter run, Joshua English and Carlos Cabrera placed eighth and ninth, respectively, for the Flames.

Janine Fajardo qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 15.80 seconds, but the final was not contested before the meet was called.

The Flames will return to Chicago and begin preparations for the next scheduled meet on April 5-6 at Illinois State's Redbird Invitational.
