CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (15-14, 6-0 HL) completed its second-straight Horizon League series sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 shutout of Detroit Mercy (13-20, 5-4 HL). The Flames' two runs in the bottom of the third proved to be all they would need, as starter
Jennah Speth and the Flames defense weathered a late threat from the Titans to keep the shutout in place and extend UIC's win streak to eight.
Game Highlights
- The Flames had a good look in the bottom of the second, loading the bases off an Alyssa Griman walk and singles from Jennah Speth and Cassie Kaelber, but the next two batters went down in order to keep the game scoreless.
- UIC got right back to work in its next at bat, scoring the game's only runs in the bottom of the third. Lexi Watts led off with a single through the right side and stole second. Tara McElligott followed with a slow-rolling ball to the shortstop, who checked Watts at second and allowed McElligott to take first. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Watts came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat Skylee James, 1-0. Kayla Wedl stepped up to the plate next and put a grounder up the middle, scoring McElligott and giving UIC the 2-0 lead.
- Detroit Mercy threatened in its final at bat, as a one-out double advanced to third on a UIC throwing error. The next batter walked and an attempted double steal was ousted at home plate by Griman, giving the Flames two outs with a runner on second. The next batter grounded out to the pitcher, ending the threat and the game.
