Busy Week Continues at Western Michigan

Dual Meet is Second of Three Competitions This Week

Fresh off a record-setting performance Sunday, the Flames will be right back in action Tuesday night in a dual meet at Western Michigan.  The midweek meet, a Tuesday night tradition for the past three years, will give UIC another chance to boost their national qualifying score (NQS).  That score, an average of each team's top six scores of the season with weight given to road meets, determines which teams will qualify for NCAA Regionals.

With their school record sixth score of 195 or higher Sunday, UIC upped its NQS to 195.210.  That places the Flames 33rd in the national rankings.  The top 36 teams compete at regionals.  Past results would indicate a strong performance Tuesday: at the last three meets at WMU, each coming just 48 hours after the previous meet, the Flames had their highest score of the season.

Around the Rotations
  • Miki Northern, a nominee for the AAI Award (gymnastics' equivalent of the Heisman Trophy), tied three season highs on Sunday and leads the conference on floor and all-around.
  • Serena Baker has the MIC's top bars NQS, 9.850.
  • Kayla Baddeley has won vault in four straight meets and five times overall.
  • Alisa Sheremeta has the team's top single score on beam this year, in a tie with Baddeley.  Riley Mahoney is just a quarter-tenth behind them.
Last Time Out
  • UIC finished first for the eighth straight meet – setting a new school record – on Sunday at Lindenwood in a tri-meet with Penn.
  • The Flames' 195.650 was a season high, and their sixth score of 195 or higher.  That is also a new program single-season record.
  • Baddeley (vault), Baker (bars), Northern and Ashley Albrecht (tied on floor), and Northern (all-around) were event champions.
Scouting the Broncos
  • Western Michigan fell to Kent State on Saturday, despite posting their second highest team score of the season (195.050).
  • Rachael Underwood and Emily Carless were event champions on vault and beam respectively.
  • Underwood leads the team on vault and beam.  Morgan Spence has the Broncos' top average on bars, floor, and all-around.
  • The Broncos are strongest on bars.  In addition to Spence, Amelia Mohler is in the top six in the MAC on bars.
  • UIC is undefeated (6-0) against teams from the MAC this year.  The Flames have topped league-leading Kent State, Northern Illinois (twice), Eastern Michigan, and Bowling Green (twice).
