Flames Fall to Iowa; Come Back to Defeat Butler

UIC loses 5-1 to Hawkeyes, posts 3-2 comeback victory over Bulldogs

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The UIC softball team (5-11) split day one of the Saluki Invitational on Friday, falling 5-1 to Big Ten foe Iowa (12-8) before ending the day with a 3-2 comeback victory over Butler (6-9). The Flames trailed 2-1 heading into their final at bat against the Bulldogs, but were able to use two hits and two Butler errors to their advantage to take the one-run victory.

Tara McElligott's solo shot in the bottom of the second proved to be the only run the Flames would get in the opener against Iowa. Meanwhile the Hawkeyes offense scored three in the second and two in the fourth to take the win.

Game Highlights vs. Iowa
  • Iowa scored first with a three-run homer in the top of the second, 3-0.
  • McElligott unloaded on the first pitch of the bottom of the second with a solo shot down the right-field line, 3-1.
  • Cassie Kaelber and Skylee James singled back-to-back with two outs in the bottom of the third to give the Flames an opportunity to score, but Iowa forced a grounder in UIC's next at bat to get out of the jam.
  • The Hawkeyes got another pair of runs across in the top of the fourth off a bases-loaded walk and an infield single, 5-1.

  • Iowa outhit the Flames 8-5. Kaelber led the offense with a 2-for-3 showing, while James, McElligott and Kayla Pociejewski made up UIC's remaining three hits. McElligott took home the sole RBI for UIC.
  • Allie Trudeau pitched the duration for her fourth complete game of the season. The junior gave up five runs, all earned, off eight hits while striking out three.
Game Highlights vs. Butler
  • Butler took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third off a two-out solo homerun over the centerfield fence.
  • Kayla Wedl started off the third with a hard ground ball hit to third, and she moved on to second on a McElligott grounder. Alyssa Griman put a liner out in left field to bring around Wedl and tie the game at one.
  • The Bulldogs broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with two singles and a walk, 2-1.
  • Emily Wetzel put a one-out single up the middle in UIC's final at bat, and Lexi Watts followed with a bunt.
