Big Bats Lift Flames over IUPUI, 19-9

UIC scores a season-high 19 runs, ties single-game home run record

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC softball team (18-19, 8-2 HL) brought out the big bats on Tuesday for a 19-9 run-rule victory over conference foe IUPUI (14-30, 8-6 HL). The Flames' 19 runs marked a new season high, and their five home runs tied the single-game program record.

Game Highlights
  • UIC quickly took the lead in the top of the first after Lexi Watts batted a leadoff double, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kayla Wedl, 1-0.
  • The Jags scored three in their half of the first off three hits and a trio of UIC errors to switch the lead into their favor, 3-1.
  • The Flames made a big reply in the top of the second, putting up seven runs to take an 8-3 lead. Tara McElligott was hit by a pitch at the start, Emily Wetzel walked and Claire Crane put down a bunt to load the bases. Another sacrifice fly, this one from Cassie Kaelber, made it a one run game, 3-2. Schyler Ek and Watts both drew walks, bringing in Wetzel and tying the game at three, and a misjudged fly to right off Wedl's bat brought in another pair of runs and put the Flames back in the lead. Skylee James stepped up to the plate and cleared the bases with a straight shot over the center field fence, giving UIC a comfortable five-run lead.
  • A two-run homer for the home team in the bottom of the third cut at the Flames' lead, 8-5.
  • UIC put up another crooked number in the fourth with eight runs. Wedl got things started with a solo shot to lead off the inning, 9-5. James singled, Griman bunted and McElligott doubled to bring in James, 10-5. Wetzel stepped up to the plate and sent her first homer of the season out to center, scoring three, 13-5. Crane walked to get on board and Kaelber singled, but the Jags threw the ball around the infield, allowing Crane to pull up into third and Kaelber to take second. Ek reached on an IUPUI error, which plated Crane, and a double steal from Kaelber and Ek scored another run, 15-5. Watts grabbed a single to bring home Ek and push UIC's lead to a whopping 16-5.
  • The Flames added to their lead in the top of the fifth, starting the same way they did the fourth, as Griman sent a solo shot to center, 17-5. McElligott followed with another bomb, this one down the left field line, 18-5. Wetzel singled and moved to second on a wild pitch, and Crane drew a walk. Kaelber and Ek both grounded out, but moved both runners each time, scoring Wetzel and making it 19-5.
  • IUPUI rallied in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together five hits for four runs, but it came up short, as the Flames took home the 19-9 run-rule win.
Facts & Figures
  • The Flames tallied 14 hits to IUPUI's 11. Watts, James, Griman, McElligott and Wetzel all tallied multi-hit showings, while Wedl, Crane, Kaelber and Ek each recorded one.

  • James's shot in the second marked her third-straight game sending one over the fence. The senior now owns six long balls on the season.
