Flames Take Two against Green Bay

UIC wins game one 7-0; holds on for 4-3 win in game two

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (24-20, 14-3 HL) snagged a pair of wins against Horizon League foe Green Bay (11-23, 6-11 HL) at home Tuesday evening. The Flames shutout the Phoenix 7-0 game one and held on for the 4-3 win in game two to clinch their third-straight Horizon League series win.

Game One Highlights
  • Kayla Wedl ignited the offense in the bottom of the second with a one-out triple, and she came in to score on a single from Skylee James, 1-0. Alyssa Griman walked and Jasmine Willis bunted to load the bags for Claire Crane, who singled through the left side of the infield to plate James, 2-0.
  • UIC added another pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Cassie Kaelber singled and was replaced by Watts on a fielder's choice. Wedl doubled, and Griman singled out to center to bring in both Watts and Wedl, 4-0.
  • Green Bay had an opportunity to score in the top of the fourth after a leadoff single and an error, but the next three batters went down in order to end the threat.
  • Wedl doubled again in the bottom of the fourth, and she scored again on another Griman single, 5-0.
  • Back-to-back homers by Watts and Wedl in the bottom of the fourth extended UIC's lead, 7-0.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • UIC put up 15 hits to Green Bay's two. Wedl finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with all four of her hits going down as multi-base. James, Griman and Kaelber also finished with two hits apiece, while Watts, Willis, Crane, Wetzel and Ek each hit one. Kaelber's two hits extended her career-high hit streak to 13.
  • Griman drove in three runs, while Watts, Wedl, James and Crane each got credit for one.
  • Watts's solo shot was her second long ball of the season. Wedl's following bomb was her 12th of the season.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start and pitched the duration, allowing just two hits in her seventh complete-game win of the season.
Game Two Highlights
  • Watts and Wedl led off the bottom of the first with singles, and a bunt from James ended in a run, as an error on the throw to third in an attempt to contain Watts got past the infielder, 1-0. A grounder from Griman in the next at bat allowed Wedl to score, giving UIC another early 2-0 lead.
  • The lead grew to three in the third, as Watts singled, moved all the way to third on a passed ball and scored on single down the right field line by Wedl.
  • A two-run homer for the Phoenix in the top of the fifth reduced UIC's lead to one, 3-2.
  • UIC got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. Watts put the ball through the right side, stole second and made it back home on a Wedl single, 4-2.
  • Green Bay once again pulled within one in the top of the sixth after a walk, a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice, 4-3, but the Flames retired the Phoenix with a trio of grounders in the top of the seventh to claim their second win of the night.
