Flames Sweep Away Green Bay with 8-0 Run-Rule Win

UIC completes fourth Horizon League series sweep

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (25-20, 15-3 HL) finished out its regular season home schedule in style on Wednesday, taking an 8-0 (5) win over Green Bay (11-24, 6-12 HL). The Flames put up six runs off six hits and a Phoenix error in the bottom of the fourth to secure the run-rule win and complete their fourth Horizon League series sweep of the season.

Game Highlights
  • UIC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a hit and a pair of Green Bay errors. Cassie Kaelber reached on the first Green Bay error, Lexi Watts singled and Kayla Wedl walked to load the bases for the Flames. Kaelber was out at home on the fielder's choice by Skylee James, but Alyssa Griman was able to bring in Watts in the next at bat with a grounder. Wedl came home on the error off Tara McElligott's grounder, putting the Flames up by a pair.
  • Six hits and another Phoenix error gave way to a six-run fourth for UIC. Jennah Speth singled and Emily Wetzel laid down a bunt, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Kaelber singled to score Speth and stole second, which was followed by a bases-clearing triple by Watts, 5-0. Wedl walked and stole second, but an error on the throw allowed Watts to trot in from third, 6-0. James put one out in center, pushing Wedl to third, and another wild pitch plated Wedl and put James on second. Griman singled out to left to bring in James and give UIC its hefty 8-0 lead.
  • A quick top of the fifth for the Flames defense put the game to bed early, as Green Bay went down in order with a ground out, a pop up and a line drive.
