Flames Take Down Youngstown State, 6-2, for Sixth-Straight Win

UIC improves to 16-3 in Horizon League

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC softball team (26-20, 16-3 HL) came away with another Horizon League win on Friday, taking down Youngstown State (22-25, 10-7 HL) by a final tally of 6-2. The Flames kept the Penguins from scoring until their final at bat to take home their sixth-straight win.

Game Highlights
  • Lexi Watts led off the ball game with a single to the pitcher, stole second and made it all the way home on a passed ball, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Cassie Kaelber led off the third with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Watts, and scored on another two bagger from Skylee James, 2-0.
  • UIC grew its lead in the top of the fifth with three runs, 5-0. Schyler Ek started things off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kaelber, took third on an infield single by Watts and scored on a single to center by Wedl, 3-0. James batted a single to score Watts, and Griman followed with UIC's fourth single of the inning to bring across Wedl.
  • Claire Crane added a run with a solo shot to center in the top of the seventh, her fifth of the season, 6-0.
  • Youngstown State got a pair of runs in its final at bat off a two-out triple, but a grounder in the next at bat ended the inning, and the game, with a 6-2 win for the Flames.
Facts & Figures
  • UIC outhit the Penguins, 10-7. Watts led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, while Wedl and James each tallied two. Griman, Crane and Kaelber each took home one.
  • James pushed her career-high hit streak to 17 games, while Wedl extended her own personal-best hit streak to 15 games.
  • James drove in a pair of runs to lead UIC. Wedl, Griman and Crane each drove in one.
  • Allie Trudeau got the start and the finish in the circle for the Flames, allowing two earned runs off seven hits to take home her eighth complete-game win of the year.
