UIC Drops Series Opener at Youngstown State

Team's four-game winning streak snapped

NILES, Ohio – UIC failed to find a consistent offensive rhythm Friday afternoon while Youngstown State pounded out 13 hits to take down the Flames, 7-3.

UIC (11-12, 6-3 Horizon League) entered the game on the heels of a four-game winning streak, which matched the longest of the season. Youngstown State (6-23, 3-6 Horizon League) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and three more times in the bottom of the second after the Flames had tied the game.

How It Happened
  • The game got off to a promising start when Matt Bottcher ripped the second pitch of the contest to right-center field for a lead-off triple. Unfortunately the Flames were unable to bring the second baseman home. YSU then jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single and groundout.
  • UIC evened the ledger with two tallies of its own in the top of the second. Alex Dee walked to start the inning and he would score two batters later when Chris Papapietro pushed a single into right field and the YSU outfielder committed an error on the player. Papapietro ended up on third base and he scored on a wild pitch unleashed by YSU's Colin Clark.
  • The Penguins went ahead for good with a three-spot in the bottom of the second inning. Jacob Key walked back-to-back YSU hitters to load the bases with one out before back-to-back singles combined to bring in three runs.
  • The Flames slightly cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Lin-Peistrup was first up against Clark and he reached on an error. He tagged up and made it to second base on a fly ball to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then Ryan Hampe muscled a sacrifice fly to right field to score the UIC shortstop and make it 5-3. In the bottom half of the inning, however, Blaze Glenn registered a two-run home run to push the lead to four runs, where it would end.
Notable
  • Jacob Key's streak of consecutive quality starts ended at six games. The junior was lifted after 4.2 IP on Friday.
  • Scott Ota, the reigning Horizon League Batter of the Week, extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games with a double in the top of the eighth inning. That is the longest hitting streak for any UIC player at any point this season.
  • Nick Oliff pitched a career-high 3.1 IP in relief to finish out the ballgame on Friday.
  • Blaze Glenn drove in five of YSU's seven runs Friday.
On Deck
  • UIC will look to even up the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
  • RHP Joey Fredrickson is scheduled to toe the rubber for the Flames.
