UIC’s Comeback Falls Short at YSU

Four-run eighth inning not enough Saturday

NILES, Ohio — UIC scored four times in the top of the eighth inning, but the comeback fell short and Youngstown State clinched the series with a 6-5 victory at Eastwood Field.

Joshua Figueroa drove in three runs Saturday and Scott Ota hit a two-run home fun to lead the offensive effort for UIC (11-13, 6-4 Horizon League). On the mound, Joey Fredrickson surrendered four runs in 6.1 IP. He struck out five and did not walk a Penguin.

How It Happened
  • Youngstown State pushed across single tallies in the second and third innings before the Flames dented the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fourth inning. David Becker singled into centerfield with one out before the next batter, Figueroa, doubled to the opposite field to pull the Flames within a run. However, he was stranded in scoring position as the Penguins got a fly ball to left field and a grounder back to the mound to escape further damage.
  • The hosts padded the cushion with another run on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh, YSU scored three times on four hits, tow of which were RBI doubles.
  • Trailing by five runs, the Flames put together their most prolific frame of the series in the top of the eighth. Matt Bottcher opener the inning with a base hit and two batters later Ota cranked a two-run home run to right field that trimmed the deficit down to three runs. Ryan Hampe kept the line moving with a single and two batters later Becker walked on four pitches. The Figueroa hit his second double of the day, this one to left, to score Hampe and Becker to make it 6-5, but UIC would come no closer.
Notable
  • Scott Ota, the reigning Horizon League Batter of the Week, has homered in two of the last three games and three of the last five. He has a career-high eight home runs in 2019, which is also the most for a UIC hitter since Ricardo Ramirez hit nine in 2017.
  • Ota extended his hitting streak to nine games. In the last three games, he has kept the streak alive with an extra-base hit in the eighth inning.
  • Joshua Figueroa had his fourth multi-RBI game Saturday, which ranks second on the team behind Ota (6).
  • UIC has lost five consecutive games at Eastwood Field dating back to last season.
On Deck
  • The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 11 a.m. CT.
  • Left-hander Patrick Martin is scheduled to start on the mound for UIC. He has not pitched since March 23 as a result of last weekend's cancellation at Milwaukee.
