Opening Weekend Continues at Indiana

Flames Meet Hoosiers for the First Time

UIC will continue the opening weekend of action with a match at Indiana Sunday afternoon.

Both teams will be looking for their first win of 2019, and the first for their respective first year head coaches, in the first-ever meeting between the programs.  Through two preseason matches and the opener Thursday, the Flames have not allowed a goal in 2019.

A live stream of the match will be available on BTN Plus (a subscription-based service with no cable or satellite account required).  Coverage can be found via the links in the blue box above.

Last Time Out
  • The Flames played to a scoreless draw with Central Michigan on Thursday night in the season opener.
  • UIC's aggressive play earned them a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.  They scored a goal on one corner kick, but it was waved off for offside.
  • The Flames outshot CMU, 16-12, and had a 10-4 margin in shots on goal.
Flames to Watch
  • Lena Kurz turned in a clean sheet in her Flames debut.  She made three saves against Central Michigan on Thursday.
  • Defenders Tamae Douglas and Janai Cedeno helped prevent the Chippewas from building chances from the run of play.  Douglas cleared a ball off the line after Kurz made the initial save.
  • Emily Kavanaugh had a team high three shots on goal, including the Flames' best chance to win the match with just minutes remaining.
Scouting the Hoosiers
  • Indiana lost to #2 North Carolina in their season opener Thursday.
  • The Hoosiers managed just one shot, and none on goal.
  • Bethany Kopel made four saves for IU.
  • Hanna Nemeth was Indiana's lone shot taker.
 Quick Strikes
  • Early offensive pressure was UIC's hallmark in the preseason.
  • The Flames scored the first goal of each match within the first eight minutes.
  • Grace Haines tallied in the eighth minute against Southern Illinois.  Autumn Rasmussen scored at 5:03 against Cincinnati.
Igniting a New Era
  • Tom Anagnost was named the second head coach in program history on January 7.
  • Anagnost has a career record of 81-39-20 over seven years as a head coach at Central Michigan, Miami (FL), and Mississippi State.
  • Dustin Downey and Matt Gill are each in their first year as assistant coaches.
  • Erwin van Bennekom is in his first year as a head coach at Indiana, after spending four years as an assistant at Duke.
Preseason Prognostications
  • UIC was picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League preseason poll of the league's head coaches.
  • The ranking is one spot higher than the Flames' final standing in 2018.
  • Indiana is ranked 12th in the Big Ten preseason poll.
