Nneji Tabs Double-Double against Wright State

Flames come up short against defending champs, 58-43

CHICAGO – Junior Jada Nneji came away with her third double-double of the season, tabbing a game-high 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds as UIC (2-14, 1-4 HL) came up short on Thursday evening at home against Wright State (9-7, 4-1 HL). The Flames kept the Raiders to their lowest shooting percentage in Horizon League play so far and third-lowest of the season overall at 33.8 percent (24-of-71), while putting away 34.6 percent (18-of-52) of their own shots on the night.

First Half Highlights
  • Both teams scored on their first possessions, until back-to-back buckets by Jada Nneji put the Flames ahead, 6-2. Neither side scored over the next 2:30, until the Raiders were able to lay one up to cut UIC's lead in half, 6-4.
  • The Raiders closed the gap with a jumper, and another layup would give them their first lead, 8-6. Jealissa Presswood fed one up to Nneji under the basket, allowing the Flames to tie it, and a Nneji steal on the next play was fed up to Tiana Jackson, putting UIC back ahead, 10-8.
  • Wright State used a buzzer-beater layup at the end of the first quarter to pull ahead once more, 12-10.
  • Nneji and Jackson combined again with a pair of buckets to once more put the lead in UIC's favor, 14-12, but it was short-lived, as the Raiders converted a three-point play and tacked on another bucket in their next possession, 17-14.
  • Presswood closed the gap with a three, but Wright State struck again, this time with a 10-2 run to close out the first half, 27-19.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Raiders opened the second half with a pair of layups to grow their lead, 31-19. Nneji and Jackson continued to carry UIC's offensive load, scoring UIC's next eight points in between Wright State buckets, 41-27.
  • Both teams put in points from the charity stripe, until Jackson cashed in a layup on the second chance, 43-31.
  • The visitors got the next four, but the third quarter would end with a short jumper off the hands of Abreanna Lake, 47-33.
  • Jackson owned the lone bucket in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, 47-35.
  • Nneji and Tylah Lampley put together four unanswered points for the Flames, but the Raiders replied with six, 58-40.
  • Nneji chipped in three more points off a conversion, but Wright State came away with the win, 58-43.
Facts & Figures
  • Nneji's 19 points and 10 rebounds led the Flames in both categories. She also ended the night with one steal and a pair of blocks.
  • Tiana Jackson tied her personal-best with 13 points, while also tallying five rebounds and handing out three assists.
  • Nneji and Jackson combined for nearly 75 percent of UIC's scoring, recording 32 of their 43 points.
  • Jealissa Presswood posted five points and handed out a career-high five assists.
  • The Flames finished with their second-fewest turnovers of the season with 17. The Raiders picked up 16 points off those miscues, while UIC scored 11 off 13 turnovers for Wright State.
  • For the fourth-straight game, UIC finished with at least 30 points scored in the paint, but the Raiders had the advantage on the night, 34-30.
  • Wright State scored more on the second chance, 19-4, as well as off the fast break, 15-6.
  • UIC finished the night shooting 40 percent (6-of-15) from the free-throw line, compared to 58.8 percent (10-of-17) for the Raiders.
