Early Woes Sink Flames against Wright State

UIC finishes road trip with 79-55 loss to Raiders

DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC women's basketball team (3-23, 2-13 HL) closed out its longest road trip of the season on Saturday afternoon with a 79-55 to defending Horizon League Champion Wright State (15-11, 10-5 HL). The Raiders held the Flames to just four points and 14.3 percent shooting in the first quarter to create an early gap that UIC was unable to close in the remaining 30 minutes.

First Half Highlights
  • Wright State jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the start, forcing four turnovers in a two-minute span. Kimeira Burks was able to put one in for UIC, but it was followed by a three for the Raiders, 10-2.
  • Tiana Jackson cashed in a pair of free throws before 12 more points for Wright State ended the first quarter, 22-4.
  • Burks drilled a pair of threes to start things off for the Flames in the second quarter, 23-10.
  • Jackson broke up another 7-0 streak for the Raiders with two more freebies and Burks quickly added five with another three and a layup, 32-17.
  • Jada Nneji rattled off six unanswered points for UIC to end the first half, 39-26.
Second Half Highlights
  • Nneji continued her push with a jumper to start the second half, but the Flames wouldn't score again for another six minutes, when Abreanna Lake joined in the scoring with a layup, 57-30.
  • Lake scored again with a three after a trio of Raider free throws, 60-33. Shelby Case also got in on the action with the final score of the third period, 65-35.
  • Jealissa Presswood swiped the ball away from the Raiders and ran it back herself, 65-37. Wright State picked up a pair of layups, but the Flames grabbed seven of the next 10, thanks to jumpers
  • Presswood, Jackson and Lake took care of the scoring for UIC through the second half of the fourth to help the Flames outscore the Raiders 20-14 in the period, but they would ultimately fall 79-55.
Facts & Figures
  • Three Flames finished in double figures for the fourth time this season, led by Kimeira Burks and Tiana Jackson with 13 points each. It was the eighth double-digit showing for both freshmen.
  • Burks added five rebounds to her point total, as well as a pair of steals.
  • Jada Nneji finished with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Jealissa Presswood was near double figures with nine points. Abreanna Lake finished with seven.
  • Wright State shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field on the day, compared to 41.2 percent (21-of-51) for the Flames. The Raiders made 40 percent (8-of-20) of their shots from beyond the arc, while the Flames sank 35.7 percent (5-of-14) of their threes.
  • UIC made 66.7 percent (8-of-12) of their shots from the charity stripe, compared to 50 percent (13-of-26) for Wright State.
  • The Raiders outscored the Flames in the paint, 40-18. They were also stronger on the second chance, 18-5. UIC put away four off the fast break compared to just two for Wright State.
  • The home team picked up 24 points off UIC's 22 turnovers, while the Flames took seven from Wright State's 10 turnovers.
