SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Playing extra innings for the first time this season, the UIC baseball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in 10 innings Friday evening to UC Santa Barbara to open a three-game series.

Joshua Figueroa homered for the third time this season to tie the game at 2-all in the eighth with a solo shot, but the Gauchos' Nicolas Vogt singled up the middle in the bottom of the 10
th to drive home the winning run.

Jacob Key took the hill for the Flames, throwing 6.2 innings and while giving up two runs (one earned) and striking out four.

Game two of the series is set for a 6 p.m. (CT) first pitch Saturday evening.

How It Happened
- Key worked an effective first three innings, retiring the first nine Gauchos he faced in order. The senior recorded two of his four strikeouts over the first three frames.
- The Flames struck first with a run in the top of the fourth. Thomas Norton doubled to right center to open the inning before advancing to third on a wild pitch. The redshirt senior came around to score on the second wild pitch of the inning to give the Flames the 1-0 lead.
- UC Santa Barbara came back to take the lead in the seventh on a pair of runs. A leadoff single eventually came around to score before the Gauchos tacked on a second run due to a Flames error.
- The lead was short-lived, however, as Figueroa brought the Flames level in the top of the eighth with his third home run of the season with a solo shot to left.
- The Gauchos threated in the bottom half of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs, but Mark McCabe induced a grounder to short to end the threat.
- UIC looked to regain the lead in the ninth following a Thomas Smart single. Smart stole second the ensuing at bat, but was stranded at second to end UIC's scoring opportunity.
- Figueroa roped a double down the left field line with two outs in the 10th but was stranded on second base.
- UCSB put runners on second and third with two outs, setting the stage for the Gauchos' walk off single.
