Flames Defeat Drake in Extras; Fall to Tulsa

UIC defeats Bulldogs 4-3 (8), drops 9-1 (6) decision to Hurricane

TULSA, Okla. – The UIC softball team (6-8) finished out day two of competition at the OSU/Tulsa Invitational with another 1-1 showing, winning an extra-inning thriller over Drake (7-11), 4-3 (8) before falling 9-1 (6) to co-host Tulsa (11-7) in its final game of the day.

Game Highlights vs. Drake
  • After four scoreless innings, Drake broke the tie with a single run in the top of the sixth, as a leadoff walk came around to score off a steal, a groundout and a single, 1-0.
  • The Flames responded in their half of the sixth with two runs to take over the lead, 2-1. Alyssa Griman led off with a walk and Jordyn Cebedo was brought in to pinch run. Maddie Spinks doubled and Schyler Ek was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Alannah Cran, who singled to allow Cebedo and Spinks to score.
  • The Bulldogs took back the lead with three hits and two runs in the top of the seventh, 3-2.
  • Kayla Wedl led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single and stole second. Griman drew another walk and Spinks was hit by a pitch to load up the bags. Kayla Pociejewski put a fly out to left, allowing Wedl to tag up and score, tying the game at three.
  • The Flames retired the Bulldogs in order in the top of the eighth and got to work in their half of the inning, loading the bases after Cran reached on an error, Cassie Kaelber singled and Samantha Ferguson walked. Wedl stepped up to the plate and put a fly out to right, bringing Cran in from third and handing the Flames the 4-3 extra-inning win.

  • Tulsa scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second, scoring off a sacrifice fly to right, 1-0.
  • The Hurricane tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth, as a one-out single stole second and came around to score on a triple, 2-0.
  • Kayla Pociejewski led off the sixth frame with her first home run of the season, cutting Tulsa's lead in half, 2-1.
  • Tulsa broke open the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with seven runs. The Hurricane posted five hits and took advantage of two walks, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to end the game early, 9-1.

  • Tulsa kept the Flames to just two hits, compared to nine of its own. Maddie Spinks and Kayla Pociejewski took credit for UIC's hits, while Pociejewski owned the sole RBI off her solo shot in the sixth.
  • Christina Toniolo (2-4) started and took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs off eight hits. Jennah Speth faced a pair of batters in the sixth and gave up two runs, while Marley Hanlon pitched the remaining 0.1 innings, giving up one hit.
