STILLWATER, Okla. – The UIC softball team (6-9) put up a strong fight on Sunday morning but ultimately came up short against No. 10 Oregon (17-2). After keeping the Ducks without a run through five innings, a bases-loaded single in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference maker, giving Oregon all it would need for the 2-0 victory.
The Flames finish the OSU/Tulsa Invitational with a 2-3 record, taking home wins over Louisville and Drake. For the third-straight weekend,
Samantha Ferguson led the Flames with a .417 average, tallying five hits and one RBI off her first career home run. The Freshman also crossed the dish three times herself.
Kayla Wedl finished the weekend batting .400 with a team-high six hits and two RBI, while
Maddie Spinks batted in three runs off five hits with a .385 average on the weekend.
Game Highlights
- The Flames posed an early threat in the bottom of the first, loading the bases off hits from Samantha Ferguson and Kayla Wedl and an Alyssa Griman walk, but the Flames were unable to capitalize and bring a runner across.
- Wedl batted a two-out single in the bottom of the third and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Tara McElligott fouled out to third, leaving her stranded.
- UIC kept the Ducks without a score until the top of the sixth, when a bases-loaded single drove in a pair of runs, 2-0.
- Ferguson and Wedl tried again to get UIC on a rally, leading off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back hits, but the next three Flames went down in order to end the threat.
Facts & Figures
- The two teams finished with an even five hits apiece. Kayla Wedl finished a perfect 3-for-3, while Samantha Ferguson picked up the remaining two tabs.
- Christina Toniolo gave a strong performance against the Ducks, despite taking the loss. Toniolo pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) off four hits.
- Allie Trudeau finished off the remaining 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
