YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC track and field team wrapped up the second and final day of the 2020 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships. Day two was highlighted by Kayla Isom, who claimed the women's 800m title.
Â
As a team, the men placed sixth over all (out of seven teams) while the women finished eighth of nine programs.
Â
"I'm extremely proud of the team," said head coach
Ashley Lucas. "If you don't know much about this sport, or just look at the team numbers, you'd probably assume we'd be upset. But the numbers don't always tell the full story. We came here and we fought for every point. The team is so unbelievably young that gaining their first conference championship experience was so important and we had a lot of freshmen and underclassmen step up big. I am so proud of how we handled ourselves and wait to continue to get this team to new heights. We redshirted a handful of key pieces this year so it's going to be an exciting future."
Â
Isom, the reigning outdoor champion in the women's 800m, won her second consecutive conference title in the event when she won Sunday's indoor 800m. After qualifying on Saturday with a time of 2:16.86, the junior shaved off over two seconds to win the race in 2:14.38. Fellow teammate Titi Hassan finished three seconds behind Isom to claim fourth overall with a time of 2:17.22.
Â
Josh English nearly swept the event for the Flames, finishing second in the men's 800m. English ran a personal-best time of 1:53.62, which was less than half a second off the top time of 1:53.30.
Alex Bashqawi took eighth in the event with a time of 1:58.10.
Â
Natalie Jaramillo claimed seventh in the women's mile (5:11.67) while Bashqawi took home his second top-8 finish at the meet with a fourth-place showing in the men's mile (4:19.26).
Â
Freshman
Mark Lemke earned a spot in the top-8 of the men's 3000m when he finished seventh overall in a time of 8:40.17, a new season-best for the Flames newcomer. Fellow freshman
Jahari Stubbs shaved off two one-hundredths of second from his qualifying time in the men's 60m hurdles to take eighth in the finals with a mark of 8.35 seconds.
Â
The 4x400 teams each recorded top-4 finishes, with the men placing second overall while the women took fourth. The quartet of Stubbs,
Trevor Tousana,
Dalton Burk and English teamed up to run a season-best time of 3:20.59. UIC's women's team also set a season-best in the event, with Bailey Moran, Hassan, Brenda Nguyen and Isom finishing in 3:56.33.
