Baseball Tops Army, Extends Winning Streak to Three

Four-run first inning propels UIC to 5-1 victory over Army

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Behind a four-run first inning, the UIC baseball team won its third consecutive game down in Florida, defeating the Black Knights by a 5-1 final.

Cristian Lopez threw six shutout innings, striking out six, while Joey Morris threw the final three innings and allowing on unearned run.

Matt Bottcher recorded three of UIC's 10 hits while Sean Dee and Joshua Figueroa added two his each. Trey Beckman continued his hot streak with a pair of RBIs.

The Flames close out competition in Port Charlotte, Florida and the Snowbird Classic on Sunday against Georgetown. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. (CT).

How it Happened
  • The Flames took control of the game in the very first inning. The Flames plated four runs in the top of the first, with all four runs scoring with two outs.
  • Bottcher led of the game with a single and a stolen base before the next two batters were retired. A single by Thomas Smart put runners on the corner and the second stolen base of the inning moved Smart in scoring position. UIC's first run came via a wild pitch, allowing Bottcher to score and Smart to move to third.
  • Thomas Norton walked, setting the table for an RBI triple by Beckman to make the score 3-0. Beckman would be brought home the very next batter, as Joshua Figueora's single pushed the advantage to 4-0.
  • Army looked to counter, loading the bases in the bottom half of the inning, before Lopez induced a fly ball to maintain the 4-0 cushion.
  • The Flames looked to push the lead even larger, walking the bases loaded in the second, but a grounder ended the UIC threat.
  • Smart prevented a run from scoring in the bottom of the second, as his missile from right cut the runner down trying to score from second on the single.
  • The Black Knights left two runners on in the third and fourth inning, but Lopez stood tall and kept the shutout intact.
  •  An Army error put Figueroa on base to open the eighth and advanced to second on the play. With two outs, Bottcher's single allowed Figueroa to beat the throw home and extend the Flames' lead to 5-0.
  • The Black Knights got a run back in the bottom half of the frame, as Army plated an unearned run to cut the deficit to 5-1, the final score in the game.
