Tale of Threes Ends in Favor of Youngstown State

Both teams combine for 16 threes as Flames fall 88-78

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A total of 16 threes fell on either side of the court, but it was Youngstown State (4-3, 4-3 HL) who finished out on top, defeating UIC (2-8, 1-6 HL) by a final score of 88-77 Friday afternoon. The Penguins sank nine triples to tie UIC's opponent season high mark, while the Flames put away seven long balls on the other end, their second-highest total of the season.

UIC had four players reach double figures for the fifth time this season, as Jaida McCloud (20 points), Keona Schenck (19 points), Tiana Jackson (15 points) and Kristian Young (10 points) paced UIC's offense.

First Half Highlights
  • Youngstown State connected on a pair of threes to take an early 6-0 lead, but the Flames quickly closed the gap with six unanswered to tie the game. The Penguins cashed in a trio of freebies, 9-6, before jump shots from Tiana Jackson and Amira Coles gave UIC its first lead, 10-9.
  • Another pair of threes for the Penguins sparked an 11-0 run and put the lead back in their favor, 20-10. A triple from Jackson would end the streak, 20-13.
  • Youngstown State pushed its lead back into double digits at the end of the first, 25-15.
  • A layup for Kristian Young and a three from Keona Schenck in the first minute of the second quickly cut the Penguins' lead in half, 25-20. The Flames stayed within striking distance, trailing 31-25 at the media break.
  • Following the media break, Schenck put away her second three of the day and followed it up with a short jumper to put the Flames within one, 31-30.
  • Youngstown State fired off 14 points and held the Flames the just two in the final three minutes of the half to push its lead into double digits at the break, 44-32.
  • A total of 10 threes fell in the first half, seven of which were scored by the home team.
Second Half Highlights
  • The Flames gained some ground in the middle minutes of the third quarter, holding the Penguins without a field goal across a four-minute span to bring the deficit down to eight, 53-45.
  • A three-point conversion for Schenck put UIC within five, 57-52, and a layup from Young just 24 seconds later put the Flames within four, 58-54, but a 7-2 run for the Penguins in the final 1:32 of the quarter gave them a 65-56 advantage heading into the final frame.
  • The Penguins held UIC to just a free throw through the first three minutes of the fourth, pushing their lead back into double figures, 71-57. A layup for Schenck at the 6:54 mark finally fell for the Flames, 71-59.
  • UIC sank back-to-back threes in the final minute, but it wouldn't be enough, as it fell by a final tally of 88-77.
Facts & Figures
  • Jaida McCloud's 20 points marked her second 20+ showing of the season. The freshman shot 8-for-11 on the day and also turned in six rebounds and made three steals.
  • Keona Schenck's 19-point showing is a new career high. Defensively, Schenck recorded seven steals, another career-high for the freshman.
  • Tiana Jackson's 15 points marks a season-high for the sophomore. Jackson also tied her career high with team-high five assists.
  • Kristian Young was in double-double territory with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Lindsey Rogers finished with eight points, while Daijah Smith ended the day with four points and three rebounds.
  • UIC shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) on the day, while Youngstown State finished the day shooting 54.7 percent (29-for-53) overall.
  • The Penguins were also stronger from three, sinking 42.9 percent (9-for-21) of their shots beyond the arc compared to 29.2 percent (7-for-24) for the Flames.
  • At the free-throw line, Youngstown State shot 72.4 percent (21-for-29), while the Flames shot 50 percent (13-for-26).
  • The Flames forced 22 Youngstown State turnovers, while committing a season-low 11 turnovers themselves. UIC was able to cash in 25 points off the Penguin miscues, while the home team cashed in 16 off UIC's 11 falters.
  • Youngstown State had the edge in the paint, 38-36, but the Flames had the advantage off the fast break, 25-13. UIC's bench outscored the Penguins' 26-23, but Youngstown State put in more on the second chance, 11-4.
