Second-Half Surge Lifts Penguins Past Flames

UIC falls 71-55 in series finale

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UIC women's basketball team (2-9, 1-7 HL) was unable to bring home the win on Saturday, falling 71-55 on Saturday afternoon to Youngstown State (5-3, 5-3 HL) in the fourth-straight contest between the two teams. The score stood at 28-25 at the half, but the Flames were unable to stymie the Penguins' second-half surge, which put up 43 points and shot 62.5 percent (15-for-24) in the final two frames to put UIC away for good.

First Half Highlights
  • Youngstown Stated started off with a 5-0 run in the first minute before a three-point conversion for Kristian Young and a layup from Lindsey Rogers tied the game at five. The Penguins put in a three to take an 8-5 lead at the first media timeout.
  • Rogers sank a jumper to put UIC within one, 8-7, but Youngstown State fired off a three on its next possession, 11-7. Free throws on either end put the score at 13-8, before a pair of jumpers from Jada Nneji put the Flames back within one, 13-12. A layup from the Penguins would end the fist quarter, 15-12.
  • Jaida McCloud got on the board for the Flames in the opening seconds of the second quarter, 15-14, and a layup from Jealissa Presswood brought the game to a draw at 16. A three from a wide-open Shelby Case would give UIC its first lead, 19-16.
  • Tiana Jackson extended the lead with a jump shot, 21-16, but the lead changed back into Youngstown State's hands with a 9-0 run, 25-21. Jackson scored again to end the streak, 25-23.
  • Young fought through four defenders to drive in a layup in the final seconds of the quarter, putting UIC within three at the half time break, 28-25.
Second Half Highlights
  • Back-to-back threes pushed the Penguins' lead into double digits in the early minutes of the third quarter, 37-27. Jackson scored on back-to-back possessions, 39-33, but an 11-1 series for the home team gave them their largest lead to that point, 51-34.
  • Young put in a long three at the third-quarter buzzer, making it 51-37 at the end of the third frame.
  • Nneji got to work in the fourth quarter, scoring six points for the Flames in the two and-a-half minutes, 56-43. Jackson put away a jumper, but it was replied with two more Penguin threes, 62-46.
  • UIC was unable to dig itself out of the hole, falling 71-55.
Facts & Figures
  • For the second-straight game and fourth time this season, Kristian Young paced UIC's offense with 15 points. Young finished the day shooting 4-for-9 overall with a pair of threes and went 5-for-7 at the free throw line while also collecting three rebounds and three assists.
  • Tiana Jackson turned in her second straight double-digit performance, shooting 6-for-11 with a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals.
  • Jada Nneji also finished in double figures with 10 points and three rebounds on the day.
  • Jaida McCloud led UIC's rebounding efforts with six rebounds. She also turned in nine points and handed out a pair of assists.
  • Shelby Case got her first start of the season and pulled down a season-high six rebounds to share the lead with McCloud.
  • UIC shot 40.4 percent (23-for-57) on the day, while the Penguins shot 52.1 percent (25-for-48). Youngstown State sank another nine threes, ending the day shooting 47.4 percent (9-for-19) beyond the arc compared to 30 percent (3-for-10) for the Flames. At the charity stripe, the Penguins shot 57.1 percent (12-for-21) compared to 54.5 percent (6-for-11) for UIC.
  • The Flames outscored the Penguins in the paint, 30-26, and they also cashed in more on the second chance, 11-10. UIC forced 17 YSU turnovers and converted them into 19 points, while the Penguins forced 16 Flames miscues, which they turned into 13 points. UIC's bench outscored YSU's, 21-16.
  • Youngstown State had the advantage in rebounds, 34-32, as well as assists, 18-9.
