Flames Sweep Away Mastodons, 3-0

UIC earns series sweep over Purdue Fort Wayne

CHICAGO – The UIC women's volleyball team (2-0, 2-0 HL) swept away Horizon League newcomer Purdue Fort Wayne (0-2, 0-2 HL) on Tuesday, besting the Mastodons in three-straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-17). The Flames fought to come back and win in sets one and two before soundly taking down the visitors in set three to sweep the match, as well as their first Horizon League series of the season.

Set One Highlights
  • Trailing 11-8, the Flames utilized kills from Mikala Henderson and Martina Delucchi as well as a PFW service error to tie the set at 11.
  • A bad set by the Flames and a Mastodon kill put Purdue Fort Wayne up by a pair, 15-13, but UIC took the next four to turn the tables, 17-15.
  • Two UIC miscues and a Mastodon block put the visitors back in the lead, 19-18, but another 4-0 run for the Flames put them up for good, 22-19.
  • Kills from Becca Oldendorf and Henderson would end it, 25-22, in favor of the Flames.
Set Two Highlights
  • A 4-0 series for Purdue Fort Wayne erased an early lead for the Flames, 12-10.
  • A Mastodon service error was followed by an Oldendorf ace to put UIC within one, 16-15, but PFW put away the next three for some insurance, 19-15.
  • The Flames offense found its rhythm, taking eight of the next nine to put UIC in the lead, 23-20.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne terminated three of the next four to threaten the Flames at match point, 24-23, but a kill from Paola Santiago would put the Mastodons to bed, 25-23.
Set Three Highlights
  • A trio of UIC kills broke a 9-9 tie and give the advantage to the Flames, 12-9. Two UIC miscues gave a pair back to the Mastodons, 12-11, but the Flames would take three of the next four, thanks to a pair of Santiago kills, 15-12.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne threatened again, pulling back within one after a Flames service error and a kill, 15-14.
  • UIC sped off on a 6-1 series to create some space, 21-15. The run was highlighted by kills from Oldendorf, Henderson, Delucchi and Zahria Woodard, as well as blocks from Woodard, Santiago, Delucchi and Morgan Kull.
  • The Mastodons were able to put one down before a kill from Kull and another Flames block, 23-16.
  • Purdue Fort Wayne chipped in one more termination, as a Santiago kill and a Mastodon attack error would end it, 25-17.
Facts & Figures
  • Mikala Henderson led on offense with 10 kills. The freshman also registered three service aces.
  • Paola Santiago was near a double-double with a team-high 16 digs and nine kills. Santiago also added three blocks on defense.
  • Morgan Kull turned in a double-double in her second-straight match with 35 assists and 11 digs. Kull also contributed three blocks for the defense.
  • Martina Delucchi and Zahria Woodard both collected eight kills, while Becca Oldendorf brought in seven. On defense, Woodard picked up six blocks for the Flames.
  • America Galvan contributed 15 digs on defense, followed by libero Jaclyn Oblena's 14-dig performance.
  • The Flames put down more kills than the Mastodons, 44-37, and they also recorded more digs, 64-55, as well as assists, 40-34. UIC blocked eight compared to four for the visitors.
