Creigton Ends Flames' Winning Streak

UIC Had Won Four Straight; Fell to Bluejays Saturday

Creighton scored twice in a two-minute span early in the first half, added another goal shortly thereafter, and went on to a 4-0 win over UIC Saturday night.  The loss ended a four-match winning streak, and a run of seven results in eight matches.

Sean Phillips' Summary
"We knew coming in that Creighton had a potent attack.  They started on the front foot, and we were not able to manage it.  They jumped out to a 3-0 lead and carried a large part of the first half.  Our guys were better in the second half, but when you get into a 3-0 hole on the road, it's difficult to climb back from."

Turning Points
  • The Bluejays scored in the 18th minute when Musa Qongo – who was thwarted in his initial attempt to make a cut into the box – regrouped, took a pass on the run, and shot past Andres Vasquez.
  • Less than two minutes later, Creighton knocked a corner kick into the top right corner of the goal for what would prove to be an insurmountable lead.
  • Creighton added two more goals in the 23rd and 62nd minutes off of high quality individual shots, one of which hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced down into the goal.
Match Summary
Creighton started the match on the front foot and attacked the Flames' goal from the outset, forcing Andres Vasquez to make a save less than 30 seconds in.  They racked up three corner kicks and another Vasquez save before seven minutes elapsed.  The Flames responded with a bout of possession and a couple of shots of their own, but neither reached the net.

The Bluejays scored a trio of goals in quick succession, and applied enough pressure in the offensive end, even though they did not attempt another shot the rest of the half, to keep the Flames from mounting a counter attack, much less threaten the goal.

Christian Crespo made his season debut as a 34th-minute sub.  He was one of a number of Flames who won individual battles in the early moments of the second half, when the team played with a sense of purpose that belied the score.  It was Creighton, though, who dented the scoreboard one last time, while holding UIC to a season low four shots.

Creighton became the first team to score four on UIC since Charlotte had the same number in a late October 2018 road non-conference match.  The Flames will return to Horizon League play with a match at Robert Morris next Saturday.
