Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Colonials Answer Flames' Rallies; Win 3-2

UIC Drew Even Twice, but Never Held Lead

Robert Morris made the most of their opportunities, scoring three goals on seven shots, in a 3-2 win over UIC Saturday.  The Flames tied the game twice, only to see the Colonials respond each time.

Sean Phillips' Summary
"Robert Morris was the more efficient team in executing their game plan today.  Statistically, we created chances.  We were not clinical with our opportunities.  They defended well, they defended as a group, they put their bodies on the line at key moments, and took advantage of their opportunities.  They were more efficient with their attack than we were."

Turning Points
  • UIC leveled the match at one in the 52nd minute.  Jose Perez Flores served in a corner kick that Nkusuwila Zulu slotted home.
  • The match pinballed in a seven-minute span that saw Robert Morris take a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute, and then give it up again when Younes Dayekh slammed home the rebound of a saved penalty kick.
  • Robert Morris scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute on a free kick outside the 18.
Match Details
Despite holding the majority of possession, and dominating the stat sheet in shots (20-7), shots on goal (11-5), and corner kicks (9-3), UIC allowed three goals to an opportune Robert Morris side in a 3-2 loss in Moon Township, Pa.

The Flames initiated their attack early and often, notching a handful of shots and corner kicks in the first minutes of the match.  Younes Dayekh was the first to test keeper Grant Glorioso.  Dayekh finished with a game-high four shots on goal.  Shortly after he got into the mix, Francisco Espinoza, who made the first start of his career, put a try on target.

Robert Morris turned the tables late in the first half.  They had a run of shots that Andres Vasquez had to save, before Ethan Romito scored a 42nd-minute goal, which deflected off a Flame and into the net, to give the hosts the lead at the break.  UIC came out of halftime focused, and were rewarded just seven minutes in.  Eduardo Garcia had a shot off a corner kick go high, portending the sequence that would result in a goal just minutes later.  Dayekh took a shot that was blocked out for a corner.  Jose Perez Flores took the kick, which found Nkusuwila Zulu's head for the equalizer.

Things got very interesting in the 63rd minute.  The Colonials went in front 2-1 thanks to an Owen Jowett score.  Having earned a throw-in, Robert Morris made committed runs, played the ball across the box, and Jowett finished.  Within four minutes, the Flames had another corner kick and were fouled on the restart.  Dayekh attempted the penalty shot, having made both of his PKs on the season.  This time, he was saved, but followed his shot to slot the rebound home.

It took Robert Morris just two and a half minutes to go back on top for the third and final time.  After Kelvin Ramirez' goal, Bukola Abdulwahab put a shot on frame.  The match marked his return to action after missing four matches due to injury.  Jacob Graiber also returned following a five-match absence.

UIC will return to action Wednesday when they host Wright State.
