UIC Forced 32 Turnovers in Win Over Benedictine

Kristian Young scored 19 points and Jaida McCloud had 17, as four Flames scored in double digits in UIC's 77-67 win over Benedictine.  The exhibition game saw UIC force 32 turnovers, which led to 32 Flames points.  Keona Schenk and McCloud had four steals apiece.

First Quarter Notes
  • McCloud got going early and often, scoring nine of her 17 points in the opening period. The sophomore was 3-for-4 from the field, including a 3-pointer, while adding a pair from the line.
  • After giving up the first basket of the game, the Flames kept pace with the Eagles until a 9-2 run pushed UIC in front, 20-16.
  • Justice Gee scored four unanswered to end the run while McCloud chipped in a triple from the corner.
  • Benedictine scored the final three points of the quarter to pull within one at 20-19 following the opening quarter of action.

Second Quarter Notes
  • Kristin Young opened the second quarter with a 3-point play as she was fouled going to the hoop. The bucket-and-one kick-started an 11-point second quarter for Young after being held in check in first 10 minutes of action.
  • A quick 6-0 scoring run over 1:11 of game action put the hosts in front by a two at 33-31. Keona Schenck, Lindsey Rogers and Young all connected at the rim for the Flames during the run.
  • UIC ended the period on a run, outscoring Benedictine, 8-1, over the final 3:23 of the period.

Third Quarter Notes
  • The Flames forced a Benedictine timeout with 3:24 remaining in the third after going on a quick 5-0 run over 32 seconds. Justice Gee connected on a free throw, Keona Schenck forced a steal and took it the length for a pair before Gee forced another steal with full-court pressure and converted on the offensive end.
  • The Flames locked down on the defensive end, limiting the Eagles to just 30% shooting (3-for-10) from the field in the third quarter, including just 1-for-4 shooting form beyond the arc.
  • Benedictine was able to trim into the UIC lead by a point thanks largely to nine made free throws.

Fourth Quarter Notes
  • The Flames saved their best quarter for the final quarter, outscoring Benedictine by six in the last 10 minutes.
  • Young had a pair of layups down the stretch, the second of which pushed UIC's lead to a game-high 11 points.  The sophomore finished with a game-high 19 points.
  • UIC made five of its six free throws in the period to keep the Eagles at bay.  That performance boosted their free throw performance to 70% for the game.
