UIC Outlasts The Titans In Overtime Thriller

Flames Fend Off Titans Late Behind Clutch Free-Throw Shooting

DETROIT - The UIC Flames (2-5, 1-3 Horizon) defeated the Titans of Detroit Mercy (0-8, 0-4 Horizon), 68-64 in overtime at Calihan Hall. The Flames were led in scoring by Jaida McCloud, who notched a new career-high with 30 points. McCloud went 14-17 at the foul line and 8-13 from the field. The sophomore added five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.

The Flames' 21-point first quarter set them up for early success against the winless Titans, but after a six-point second quarter, Detroit Mercy had clawed back. UIC had a 27-25 lead heading into the half.

UIC came back to form in the third quarter, scoring 18 points and drawing seven fouls. The Titans continued to stick with the Flames, scoring 16 points of their own. In the final moments of the fourth, the Flames were trailing the Titans, 57-55 after a Detroit Mercy banked in a 3-pointer. With the ball in the Flames' possession, Kristian Young drove into the paint, drawing a foul to put her at the line with a chance to force overtime. Despite jeers from fans, Young sunk both, pushing the game into overtime.

McCloud went on to score seven of the Flames 11 points in overtime, finishing out the win. A clutch steal and pair of free throws by Bailey Lutes put the momentum in UIC's favor. Keona Schenck went on to seal the win with one final free throw to finalize the Flames 68-64 win.

UIC will be back after finals week to face off against Indiana State on Tuesday, Dec. 14 in Terre Haute, Ind.
