Flames Split Pair of Extra-Inning Battles

UIC falls to Syracuse, 6-4 (8); defeats Mount St. Mary’s 8-3 (8)

ROCK HILL, SC – The UIC softball team (2-1) split a pair of extra-inning battles in day two of the Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic, dropping a 6-4 decision in eight innings against Syracuse (3-3) before taking an 8-3 eight-inning victory over Mount St. Mary's (1-5) in the nightcap.

Game Highlights vs. Syracuse
  • Syracuse scored first with a pair of two-out solo shots in the top of the first, 2-0.
  • A pair of doubles in the top of the second added another run for the Orange, 3-0.
  • Kayla Wedl got the Flames on the board in the bottom of the third with her second solo home run in as many days, 3-1.
  • Tara McElligott led off the bottom of the fourth with a double and came in to score after a pair of wild pitches to put the Flames within one, 3-2.
  • The Orange added a run in the top of the sixth after a leadoff single came around to score on another single and a pair of ground outs, 4-2.
  • UIC bridged the gap with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Wedl led off with an infield single, stole second and came home on a double from McElligott, 4-3. McKennah Ulrey followed with a single, which plated McElligott, 4-4.
  • Still tied after seven, the Flames and the Orange went into extras. With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, Syracuse started the eighth inning with a runner on second. The Orange's leadoff batter homered to center, breaking the tie and giving them the lead, 6-4.
  • The Flames were unable to get a run across in their half of the eighth, giving Syracuse the 6-4 win.
Facts & Figures vs. Syracuse
  • Kayla Wedl went 3-for-4 on the day with a single, a double and a home run to lead UIC's offense. Wedl also collected one RBI and crossed the plate twice.
  • Tara McElligott collected a pair of doubles and a pair of runs for UIC, while also recording one RBI.
  • McKennah Ulrey, Maddie Spinks and Cassie Kaelber picked up UIC's remaining three hits. Ulrey also recorded UIC's remaining RBI.
  • Chrstina Toniolo got the start in the circle and pitched seven innings, allowing five runs (four earned) off eight hits while striking out three.
  • Miranda Gomez came in to pitch the extra inning in the seventh to take the loss, allowing one earned run off one hit.
Game Highlights vs. Mount St. Mary's
  • After three and-a-half scoreless innings, Mount St. Mary's broke the scoreless streak with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fourth, 1-0. A wild pitch and an infield single pushed the lead to two, 2-0.
  • The Flames offense found its spark in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs to take over the lead, 3-2. Maica Ingles led off with a single and moved to third on a double off the bat of Wedl. Both Ingles and Wedl came home off a single from McElligott, tying the game at two. Emma Crowley followed with her first collegiate hit and RBI, bringing in McElligott with a single, 3-2.
  • The Mount brought the game back to a tie with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, 3-3.
  • With the tiebreaker rule once again in effect, the Flames started the eighth inning with Ingles at second, who was able to move to third on a wild pitch. Samantha Ferguson drew a walk in UIC's first at bat and was replaced on the bases by Dee Dee Caskey, who joined Ingles in scoring on a triple from Wedl, 5-3. A foul out from Isabelle Garcia allowed Wedl to tag up and score, pushing UIC's lead to three, 6-3. The hit parade continued, as Crowley and Kaelber both followed with singles and were able to score on a double from Alannah Cran, 8-3.
  • The Flames were able to keep the Mount from scoring in their half of the eighth, sealing the deal on their 8-3 extra-inning victory.
Facts & Figures vs. Mount St. Mary's
  • The Flames outhit the Mount, 12-7. Kayla Wedl once again led the way, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Emma Crowley turned in a multi-hit showing in her collegiate debut, collecting two hits, one RBI and one run.
  • Cassie Kaelber, Alannah Cran and Maica Ingles also turned in multi-hit showings with a pair of hits apiece. Cran also finished with two RBI.
  • Tara McElligott recorded one hit, one run and a pair of RBIs. Isabelle Garcia also drove in a run for the Flames in her UIC debut.
  • Alyssa McIntosh made her Flames debut, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing two earned runs off five hits while striking out a pair. Christina Toniolo pitched the remaining 4.0 innings to pick up her first win of the season, allowing one earned run off two hits.
