Illinois State Slips Past Flames, 4-3

UIC earns doubles point; picks up singles wins from Agnes Gustafsson and Ana Jover

CHICAGO – The UIC women's tennis team (4-4) fought to a 3-3 tie, but were unable to finish with a win on Saturday, taking a 4-3 loss to in-state rival Illinois State (8-4). The Flames picked up the doubles point but fell into a 3-1 hole after the Redbirds claimed the first three singles matches. UIC answered with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to bring the match to a 3-3 tie, but the Redbirds broke the tie and claimed the win with a victory in the No. 2 match.

Doubles Highlights
Tamara Malazonia and Nell Arendt combined to take down Illinois State's Jelena Karla Vujicic and Alicja Zduniak in the No. 2 match, 6-4, but the Redbirds replied with a win at No. 1, as Tijana Zlatanovic and Tara Damnjanovic got the best of Lucie Prochazkova and Agnes Gustafsson by the same score, 6-4. Ana Jover and Tuva Wallin put the doubles point firmly on UIC's side with another 6-4 win at No. 3 over Laura Arciniegas and Othelia Brodin.

Singles Highlights
The Redbirds tied the match at one after picking up a win at No. 6, as Laura Arciniegas defeated Nell Arendt, 6-2, 6-1. ISU's Laura Fitzgerald brought down Tuva Wallin, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 match, giving Illinois state the lead, 2-1. The Redbirds' lead pushed to 3-1 after the No. 1 match had Tijana Zlatanovic winning over Tamara Malazonia, 6-3, 6-3. Agnes Gustafsson put the Flames back within one in the No. 3 match, taking down Natalia Bravo, 6-2, 6-4, and Ana Jover brought the match back to a tie at No. 4, outlasting Penelope Abreu, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. It all came down to the No. 2 match, which ended with Illinois State's Tara Damnjanovic defeating Lucie Prochazkova, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4.

The Flames will tackle four home matches in a four-day span, hosting city rival Chicago State on Tuesday, March 2, before welcoming Cardinal Stritch to Chicago on Thursday, March 4. The Flames will then wrap up the week with a doubleheader against Roosevelt on Friday, March 5.
