Flames Drop Finale to Wright State

Teyvion Kirk records his sixth double-double of the season

CHICAGO – Wright State knocked off UIC for the second time in as many nights, topping the Flames 77-57 on Saturday at Credit Union 1 Arena.

UIC (8-9, 5-7 Horizon League) struggled to slow Wright State's (15-4, 13-3 Horizon League) well-balanced scoring attack. Three Raiders scored in double figures Saturday, led by Loudon Love's game-high 18 points. Two of his teammates scored at least 16 points apiece and a third added nine off the bench.

On the other end, the Flames were able to score with a bit more regularity in the weekend finale than they did on Friday. After shooting 37% from the floor in a loss to WSU 24-hours prior, the Flames shot 40% on Saturday. The long-range woes persisted with only five of 23 3-point attempts finding the bottom of the net. The Raiders shot 50% (7of-14) from downtown.

Teyvion Kirk registered his sixth double-double in a UIC uniform Saturday, and fifth against an Horizon League foe. The Joliet, Ill., native contributed 13 points to go with a team-high 10 rebounds. Michael Diggins led the Flames with 16 points, his highest total since scoring 16 against Robert Morris on January 15. Maurice Commander was in double figures for the second straight game, tallying 14 points.

UIC will hit the road for its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, a two-game jaunt to Indianapolis to tussle with IUPUI. Games on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 are scheduled for 11 a.m. CT, and can be seen on ESPN+.

How It Happened – First Half
  • The Raiders struck first, scoring the first six points of the game before Diggins ended the run with a turnaround jumper in the paint, the first of four first-half field goals for the senior.
  • Wright State built the lead to as many as 12 in the first half before the Flames closed the half strong. UIC held the Raiders to one point over the final 4:10 of the first half while getting a pair of baskets from Kirk and a floater from Diggins to end the half.
  • Diggins led all scorers in the opening half with 12 points to go along with a team-best six rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

How It Happened – Second Half
  • Diggins pulled the Flames within five of Wright State with a hook shot to open the second-half scoring. Six unanswered points from the visitors pushed the lead to 12 with 17:42 to play.
  • The Flames would get within 10 on a pair of occasions shortly thereafter but was unable to close the gap any further.
  • Kirk finished the half with seven points and six boards while Commander added nine points for the Flames.

News and Notes
  • Kirk has a team-leading six double-doubles this year, including five in Horizon League play.
