CLEVELAND – The UIC women's tennis team (8-4, 1-0 HL) made its 2021 Horizon League debut on Saturday morning, outlasting Cleveland State (1-6, 0-1 HL) in a back-and-forth battle by a 4-3 score. The Flames rallied after dropping the doubles point, fighting to a 3-3 tie in singles before picking up the deciding win in the No. 3 match.
Doubles Highlights
Ana Jover and
Tuva Wallin were dealt a 6-1 loss to Selma Tounsi and Bethany Yauch in the No. 3 match.
Tamara Malazonia and
Nell Arendt dropped a 6-3 decision to Kateryna Avram and Blanche Lenoan at No. 2, giving Cleveland State the 1-0 lead. The No. 1 match between UIC's
Agnes Gustafsson and
Lucie Prochazkova as well as the Vikings' Klara Mrcela and Miruna Vasilescu went unfinished.
Singles Highlights
Agnes Gustafsson gave a dominating performance against Klara Mrcela in the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-1, to even the match at one. The Vikings jumped back in the lead in the No. 1 match, as Miruna Vasilescu defeated
Tamara Malazonia, 6-1, 6-1.
Ana Jover tied the match at two, defeating Sian Payne at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1, but the Vikings immediately answered, as Bethany Yauch bested
Tuva Wallin at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
Georgia Gulin took down Kateryna Avram in the No. 6 match to once more tie it, 6-2, 7-5, bringing it all down to the No. 3 match, where
Lucie Prochazkova took care of Blanche Lenoan, 6-4, 7-6 (2) to put the match decisively in UIC's hands.
