CHICAGO – In its first set of games at Flames Field since 2019, the UIC softball team (7-9, 4-2 HL) erupted for a pair of run-rule victories over Horizon League foe Purdue Fort Wayne (3-7, 2-4 HL) on Saturday, taking game one 9-1 in six innings before polishing off the Mastodons with an 11-3 win in six innings in game two. The Flames put together an impressive 25 hits between the two games, including a team season-high 15-hit effort in game two.
Game One Highlights
- Kayla Wedl led off the game for the Flames with a single up the middle, and she stole second to move herself into scoring position for Emma Crowley, who battle a single to the second baseman to score Wedl, 1-0.
- Purdue Fort Wayne strung together a trio of hits to tie the game at one in the top of the second.
- A two-out rally for the Flames in the bottom of the third broke the tie and gave them the edge. Samantha Ferguson singled, Tara McElligott made it all the way to second on an error and a double from Crowley scored them both, 3-1.
- UIC tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Maica Ingles led off with a walk, which was followed by a pair of bunts from Isabelle Garcia and Dee Dee Caskey, allowing Ingles to score, 4-1. A single to right off the bat of Ferguson brought in both Garcia and Caskey, 6-1.
- The bottom of the sixth started off with a walk for Alannah Cran and continued with a Maddie Spinks bunt. A wild pitch advanced both runners, and a double from Wedl scored both runners, 8-1. Ferguson followed with her third hit of the day to bring in Wedl and end it early, 9-1.
Game One Facts & Figures
- The Flames outhit the Mastodons, 10-3. Ferguson led with a 3-for-4 performance, followed by Wedl and Crowley with two apiece. Garcia, Spinks and Caskey each added a hit for UIC.
- Crowley and Ferguson led with three RBIs apiece, while Wedl finished with two. Caskey also drove in a run for UIC.
- Wedl and Cran each crossed the plate twice for the Flames, while McElligott, Ingles, Ferguson, Spinks and Caskey each crossed once.
- Miranda Gomez pitched the duration to pick up her third win of the season. The freshman allowed just one earned run off three hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Game Two Highlights
- Purdue Fort Wayne struck first in game two, as a leadoff single came around to score after a steal, a groundout and a sacrifice fly, 1-0.
- The Flames made their reply in the bottom of the second. McElligott walked, Cran singled to third, and after a double steal, both runners scored on a single to left from the pinch-hitter Larisa Villa, 2-1.
- UIC extended its lead in the bottom of the third after Wedl reached on an error and Ferguson and Crowley both followed with hits, 3-1. The inning continued with a bunt from Cassie Kaelber to load the bases and an error from the Mastodons, which allowed another run to cross, 4-1. With the bases still loaded, Spinks grounded out to second base, but it was enough for Crowley to still able to score, 5-1.
- Two singles and a double for Purdue Fort Wayne in the top of the fourth cut UIC's lead in half, 5-3.
- The Flames got both runs back in its half of the fourth, after a bunt from Caskey and a double from Wedl put a pair of runners in scoring position for Ferguson, who singled to score them both, 7-3.
- UIC pushed its lead to seven with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ingles drew a one-out walk and Caskey moved her over with a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch allowed Ingles to move into third, and another double off the bat of Wedl allowed her to easily score, 8-3. Another wild pitch moved Wedl to third and a single to left center from Ferguson moved her home, 9-3. Crowley capped it off with a double to plate Ferguson, 10-3.
- The Flames sealed the deal in the bottom of the sixth after a one-out double from Cran and a single up the middle from Spinks, 11-3.
Game Two Facts & Figures
- UIC's 15 hits were a team season high. Crowley and Ferguson led the way with three hits each, while Wedl and Cran also finished with multi-hit performances. McElligott, Kaelber, Spinks, Villa and Caskey each contributed a hit as well.
- Ferguson once more led the way with another trio of RBIs. Crowley, Spinks and Villa each drove in a pair of runs, while Wedl drove in one.
- Wedl led the Flames with three runs on the day, followed by Cran with two. Ferguson, Crowley, McElligott, Ingles, Caskey and McKennah Ulrey each finished with one run.
- Christina Toniolo got the start and the win in the circle, allowing three earned runs off six hits in 6.0 innings of work to improve to 4-3 on the season.
