Flames Tie Single-Game Home Run Record in DH Sweep Over Cleveland State

UIC sweeps doubleheader over Vikings

CHICAGO – The UIC softball team (20-14, 17-7 HL) maintained its perfect record at home on Friday afternoon as it earned a doubleheader sweep over Horizon League foe Cleveland State (9-25, 4-18 HL), taking game one 5-1 before run-ruling the Vikings in game two, 17-3 (5). The Flames tied the team's single-game home run record in game two, sending five balls over the fence, while also setting team season highs in runs scored (17), hits (16) and RBIs (16).

Game One Highlights
  • The Flames put up two runs in their first at bat for an early advantage. Dee Dee Caskey batted a one-out single to left, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error, and she came in to score on a single up the middle from Kayla Wedl, 1-0. Wedl moved to third after a steal and a grounder, and she also came in to score after an infield single off the bat of Emma Crowley, 2-0.
  • Cassie Kaelber led off the bottom of the second with a single to third, and she made it all the way back home after a steal, a sacrifice bunt from Caskey and a single from Wedl, 3-0.
  • Cleveland State got on the board in the top of the sixth after a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt, 3-1.
  • Tara McElligott added some insurance for the Flames in the bottom of the sixth, sending her sixth home run of the season over the fence in left center to score two more runs, 5-1.
  • The Vikings got one base runner in the top of the seventh off an error, but the Flames got out of the inning unharmed to seal the deal on the 5-1 victory.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • UIC had the advantage in hits, 9-6. Wedl and Kaelber led the way with two hits apiece while Caskey, Samantha Ferguson, Crowley, Alannah Cran and McElligott each finished with one hit apiece.
  • Wedl and McElligott led with two RBIs a piece, while Crowley took credit for the remaining RBI.
  • Caskey, Wedl, Cran, McElligott and Kaelber scored UIC's five runs.
  • Marley Hanlon pitched the duration and improved to 6-2 on the season. The senior southpaw allowed just one earned run off six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Game Two Highlights
  • The Flames once again scored first in game two, pulling out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a bases-loaded groundout for Crowley scored Wedl from third.
  • UIC put up a crooked number in the bottom of the second, jumping out to a 9-0 lead after its second at bat. McElligott was hit by a pitch to start off the inning, and Kaelber and Caskey each followed with a bunt to load up the bases. Maddie Spinks grounded out to first, but it plated McElligott from third, 2-0. Cran stepped up to the plate next and found the gap out in left center, bringing home both Kaelber and Caskey, 4-0. Maica Ingles walked and Wedl cleared the bags with a laser over the fence in left, 7-0. Ferguson kept the inning going with a double before Crowley would clear the bags once again with her fourth home run of the year, making it 9-0.
  • The Vikings were able to push across a trio of runs off a trio of hits in the top of the third, 9-3.
  • The Flames put up another eight spot in the bottom of the third to run away with it, 17-3. Caskey led things off with the first home run of her career, sending it over the fence in center, 10-3. Two batters later Cran batted a solo shot of her own, 11-3. Ingles drew a walk and came all the way in to score on a double from Ferguson, 12-3. Crowley singled to bat in Ferguson, 13-3, and McElligott followed that up with her second home run of the day and the fifth for the Flames in the game, 15-3. The inning continued as Kaelber singled to the shortstop and came around to score after a bunt from Caskey caused a Cleveland State throwing error, 16-3. The Flames' final run of the inning came as Ingles drew a bases-loaded walk, 17-3.
  • The Vikings drew a one-out walk in their final at bat in the top of the fifth, but she was left stranded after a pair of flyouts, ending the game early with a 17-3 win for UIC.
Game Two Facts & Figures
  • UIC had a hefty advantage in hits, 16-6. Ferguson, Kaelber and Caskey all led for the Flames with a three-hit performance, followed by Wedl, Crowley and Cran with two hits apiece. McElligott collected the remaining hit for UIC.
  • Crowley drove in the most runs, picking up four RBI in the finale. Cran and Wedl each drove in three runs, while McElligott drove in two and Ferguson, Caskey and Spinks each drove in one.
  • The freshman Caskey led UIC with three runs scored, while Ingles, Wedl, Ferguson, Crowley, McElligott, Kaelber and Cran each scored twice.
  • Christina Toniolo pitched all 5.0 innings, picking up her 10th win of the season. The sophomore allowed three earned runs off six hits and struck out three in the finale.
