Flames Split #HLSB Finale at IUPUI

UIC wins game one 1-0, falls 9-6 in finale

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC softball team (26-18, 23-11 HL) settled for a split in its Horizon League regular season finale at IUPUI (12-29, 10-21 HL) on Saturday, coming out on top in game one 1-0 before falling 9-6 in the finale. The Flames took game one behind a solo home run from Kayla Wedl and a strong performance in the circle from Marley Hanlon but were unable to complete the comeback effort in game two.

Game One Highlights
  • Game one started off as a pitchers' duel, with only three hits recorded between the two teams in the first five innings. Kayla Wedl broke the scoreless streak in the top of the sixth with homer over the fence in left, giving the Flames a 1-0 lead.
  • The Jags threatened in their half of the sixth, batting a pair of singles to put runners on first and second with two outs. IUPUI attempted to score on another single, but the runner on second was caught at home by the Flames' defense for the third out.
  • The home team went down in order in the bottom of the seventh off a pop up and a pair of groundouts, securing the 1-0 win for UIC.
Game One Facts & Figures
  • The Flames tallied just four hits compared to only five for IUPUI. Wedl, Alannah Cran, Samantha Ferguson and Maica Ingles took credit for UIC's tabs.
  • Wedl earned the lone RBI and run of the game off her home run in the top of the sixth.
  • Marley Hanlon pitched a gem in the circle for the Flames, allowing no runs and spreading IUPUI's five hits across 7.0 innings to improve to 9-4 on the season. The senior allowed no walks and struck out three in the complete-game performance.
Game Two Highlights
  • The Flames jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Wedl led off with a single to left and Ingles drew a walk, and the pair pulled off the double steal to put two runners into scoring position. An infield single for Cran plated Wedl, 1-0, and a later single from Maddie Spinks scored Cran, 2-0.
  • The Jags took over the lead in their half of the first, scoring four runs off three hits, a walk and an error, 4-2.
  • IUPUI extended its lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, 6-2.
  • UIC cut at the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring one run after a walk for Emma Crowley and singles from Dee Dee Caskey and Wedl, 6-3.
  • The Jaguars tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth off four hits and an error, 9-3.
  • The Flames attempted a comeback in the top of the seventh as Wedl led off with a single and Ingles reached on an error and stole second. Tara McElligott doubled to left to score them both, 9-5. The inning continued as McElligott stole third and scored on an infield single from Isabelle Garcia, 9-6, but the next two batters were retired to end the threat.
