Flames Drop NCAA Regional Opener to No. 8 Mizzou

UIC falls 8-0 in six innings

COLUMBIA, MO. – The UIC softball team (29-22) began its 12th NCAA Regional appearance with a tough 8-0 (6) loss to host and No. 8 seed Mizzou (39-15) on Friday evening. The Flames were held to just one hit and were plagued by four errors on defense while the Regional hosts posted 13 hits on offense to come away with the win.

Game Highlights
  • Mizzou took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a leadoff solo home run and a trio of singles.
  • Missouri extended its lead in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of four hits and a pair of UIC errors, 5-0
  • The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the fourth off a walk and a pair of singles, 6-0.
  • UIC got its first and only hit with one out in the top of the sixth, as freshman Isabelle Garcia lifted a single over the shortstop's head, but she was left stranded at first after back-to-back flyouts.
  • An error and a pair of singles brought across two more runs for Mizzou in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early, 8-0.
Facts & Figures
  • Garcia's hit in the bottom of the sixth was the lone hit for the Flames, who were outhit 13-1.
  • The Flames had three additional baserunners in the game via two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Maica Ingles and Emma Crowley drew the walks, while Samantha Ferguson took the hit-by-pitch.
  • Marley Hanlon got the start and took the loss, dealing 2.2 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) off eight hits. Christina Toniolo pitched 2.2 innings of relief and gave up three earned runs off five hits.
