Gustavo Schwebel won the #3 singles draw to highlight a strong finish at the River Forest Invitational Saturday.
"We went 16-9 overall in singles,"
Hans Neufeld pointed out. "Our energy and effort were great and we will build on the depth and work to develop doubles chemistry."
Schwebel was one of two Flames to play for a championship.Â
Francesco Tacconi was the runner-up in the #2 bracket.Â
Pelle Strandberg and
Ammar Wazir both closed the day with victories.
The Flames will host Grand Valley State on October 9 before the ITA Midwest Regional takes place at the end of October.
Singles Results
- Strandberg lost to a Youngstown State foe in the second round before a strong, 6-1, 6-0 win over Xavier in the third place match in the #1 draw.
- Tacconi topped a Musketeer and faced Northern Illinois in the final.
- Schwebel advanced to the final with a win over Washington University, and topped Xavier 7-6 (3), 6-1 to take the title.
- The #4 draw saw Anthony Nguyen drop a pair of matches to Northern Illinois and Illinois State.
- Kevin Kruzel, playing in the winner's bracket at #5, fell in a marathon to WashU, 6-7 (5), 6-3, (9). Fatigued, he lost the third-place match to Northern Illinois, 6-1, 6-1.
- Luiz Dos Santos started the day with a win over Eastern Illinois before falling to Youngstown State in a third set tiebreaker.
- Daan Bank and Theo Duclos each lost their only match of the day in the #7 pool. Artem Iermolov and Ammar Wazir each won in three sets.
