INDIANAPOLIS – The UIC Flames (2-12, 1-8 Horizon) dropped the first of their two-game series against IUPUI (11-5, 8-3 Horizon), 82-44. The Flames struggled against Collegeinsider.com mid-major No. 11 ranked IUPUI, as UIC could not find its footing in The Jungle. Keona Schenck and Kristian Young led the team in scoring with ten points a piece. Young and Schenck also each finished the game with four steals.
The Flames started strong in the first quarter behind two three-point makes from Keona Schenck, who led the team in scoring in the first. The Flames kept it close with IUPUI in the first half of the quarter, but coming out of the media timeout, the Jaguars starter to find their footing. The Flames struggled in the second quarter while IUPUI began to take over. The Flames continued to battle against the Jags, but IUPUI's shooting ability came out in the second quarter, as they made 7-15 shots. The Flames couldn't find the same luck, shooting 5-14.
UIC came out of the halftime break playing tough and showing some grit despite being down. The Flames played strong defense in the first half of the third quarter, forcing the Jaguars into 11 turnovers. UIC's strong pressure defense forced IUPUI to call timeout and reassess. In the fourth, the Flames were able to manage 18 shots and forced the Jaguars into ten turnovers, but the few shots that IUPUI could muster, they converted.
The Flames will look to recover and develop a game plan for Sunday's game as they face the Jaguars once more in Chicago. That game will be at Credit 1 Union Arena at 1 p.m.
