CHICAGO – The UIC Flames (2-9, 1-5 Horizon) fell to the Green Bay Phoenix (8-5, 4-3 Horizon), 75-38. The Flames were led in scoring by
Justice Gee, who finished the day with 13 points, a new career-high. UIC struggled to rebound against the Phoenix, as Green Bay finished with 49 boards in comparison to UIC's 27. The Flames will hit the road next Friday to face the Youngstown State Penguins.
The Flames opened up the game sluggishly against the Phoenix of Green Bay, with much of their troubles coming in the first half of the game. The Flames looked unable to match the Phoenix physicality in the first quarter, and after allowing Green Bay to score 23 points in the first quarter, the deficit would be difficult to overcome. The second quarter saw the Phoenix produce similar results, scoring 17 points. The Flames, however, showed they were not ready to give up. The Flames still struggled to get their offense running, but the team continued to fight.
Green Bay came out in the second half and went on a tear against UIC. The Flames could not find their footing out of the break, shooting only 22% from the field. The Flames got their feet under themselves in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points on the quarter, and showing some fire after two quick 3-pointers from
Lindsey Rogers. Gee started to take control on offense, scoring seven of her career-high 13 points in the fourth quarter.
The Flames will face the Penguins of Youngstown State on Friday, Jan. 14, at Youngstown, Ohio.
