Kevin Kruzel went undefeated in singles play, and numerous Flames won two out of three matches, at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State, where play wrapped up Sunday.
Kruzel won a three-set battle against a Redbird on Friday, and got stronger as the weekend went on. He topped two foes from Lindenwood by 7-6, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0 scores respectively. Kruzel teamed up with
Artem Iermolov for a pair of 8-2 doubles wins.
Pelle Strandberg and
Gustavo Schwebel claimed third place in the Red bracket. Under Davis Cup rules, they won the doubles set against Illinois State on Sunday, and Schwebel won his singles match to give the Flames the victory. Schwebel and Strandberg each had a singles win over Western Michigan, and beat the Broncos in doubles, earlier in the weekend.
Jai Vallurupalli and
Luiz Dos Santos swept Lindenwood in the first round. They won the doubles point against Bellarmine on Saturday, and Dos Santos had a singles win against a different Bellarmine team on Sunday.
Miroslav Cvjetan and
Ammar Wazir closed the weekend with a sweep of Eastern Illinois. Their doubles win came by an 8-2 margin, and that momentum carried over to each of their singles courts. Cvjetan was a 6-0, 6-2 winner and Wazir had a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Cvjetan had a singles win over Illinois State on Saturday.
Elliott Dam had a pair of straight-sets singles wins, over Chicago State and Eastern Illinois. He paired with a Chicago State player in doubles action, where he earned one win.
The Flames who qualify for ITA Regionals will return to action October 20.
