Flames Sweep Redbirds on Senior Night

UIC honored Paola Santiago following the 3-0 sweep

CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team honored Paola Santiago in impressive fashion Friday (Nov. 11) evening, as the Flames swept Illinois State on Senior Night.
 
Martina Delucchi had a dominating night, finishing with 22 kills on a .556 hitting percentage. The outside hitter added 10 digs to record a double-double. Mikala Henderson also reached double figures in kills with 11 while Zahria Woodard had a .778 hitting percentage with seven kills on no errors.
 
UIC dominated the entire match, hitting .400 through the three sets while holding Illinois State to a .238 hitting percentage. The Flames held a 5-2 advantage in aces, with Delucchi collecting four on her own. Sohila Wafeek led the offense with 44 assists.
 
The Flames dominated the opening set, cruising to a 25-15 victory. The lead quickly ballooned to a 2-0 advantage after UIC claimed a 25-18 victory. UIC and Illinois State battled to extra points in the third set. UIC had match point at 24-23, but the Redbirds scored back-to-back points to make it 25-24. Delucchi took matters into her own hands, recording kills on the next three points to seal the 27-25 victory and clinch the sweep.
 
With the win, UIC moved into sole possession of third place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The Flames will close out the home portion of its season Saturday, Nov. 12, against Bradley. First serve of the match has been moved up to 3 p.m. inside the Flames Athletic Center.
