Three-Point Barrage Lifts Flames Past Skyhawks, 77-71

Jace Carter scored a career-high 28 points in the six-point victory

BRONX, N.Y. – Behind a flurry of 3-pointers, the UIC men's basketball team defeated Stonehill, 77-71, in the program's second game of the Tom Konchalski Classic.

UIC hit a season-high 14 3-pointers, connecting at a 46.7% clip. Conversely, the Flames clamped down at the arc defensively, limiting the Skyhawks to just 5-for-17 (29.4%) from long distance.

Jace Carter led all scorers with a career-high 28 points, his second 20-point performance of the season. Carter was 10-for-14 from the field, including five three-pointers to match a career high from beyond the arc. A native of Titusville, Florida, Carter also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.

The sophomore was 1-of-4 Flames to finish in double figures. Tre Anderson added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, Toby Okani added 11 and Filip Skobalj came off the bench to go 4-for-8 from deep to contribute 12 points to the winning effort.

The Flames controlled the tempo for most of the first half, leading for 15:58 of the first 20 minutes. Carter led the way, single-handedly scoring almost half of UIC's 37 points. The guard was 7-for-10 from the field in the first half to score 17 points while Tre Anderson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give him nine in the half and provide the Flames a four-point cushion at the break.

After Stonehill came back to take a one-point lead, Skobalj hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to put the Flames back in front, 50-44, with 15:48 remaining in the game. They Skyhawks once again battled back to lead 59-58 with just under eight minutes left before an 8-0 run from Carter alone put UIC ahead for good. Carter started the run with a layup before consecutive triples. Free throws down the stretch by UIC prevented the Skyhawks from climbing back into the contest.

UIC closes out competition at the Tom Konchalski Classic on Tuesday when the Flames play Holy Cross at 3 p.m. (CT).
