SAN DIEGO - UIC softball (2-3) grabbed a 2-1 win over Middle Tennessee (1-5) in the final game of the San Diego State Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The freshman pair of
Grace Fleming and
Jojo Santiago sparked a two-out rally in the fifth inning of play that secured UIC's victory. Fleming managed an RBI double, followed by a Santiago RBI single that put UIC in the driver's seat for the rest of the game.Â
The Flames and Blue Raiders started in a defensive battle on Sunday morning. Middle Tennessee was able to get on the board first in the top of the second inning. The Blue Raiders took the early lead that was kicked off by a walk. Middle Tennessee pushed the baserunner over on a sac bunt, and after stealing third base, the Blue Raiders were able to hit an RBI single, taking the lead.
Middle Tennessee kept the lead until the bottom of the fifth when freshman Fleming and Santiago put the Flames on the board.
Maica Ingles led off the inning with an infield single. Fleming stepped to bat with two-outs and Ingles on first and delivered her first career RBI, smoking a double down the left field line. Santiago followed Fleming with a milestone of her own, recording her first RBI with a single to left-center to put UIC ahead going into the final two innings.
Christina Toniolo entered in relief in the third inning of play and dominated on the bump for the Flames. She pitched five scoreless innings allowing four hits and two walks. She pitched into weak contact in her appearance, recording 11 groundouts. Her record on the season now sits at 1-2.
The Flames will play in Stanford, Calif., next weekend for the Stanford Invitational tournament. The Flames will face BYU and Stanford on Friday, Feb. 18.
