CHICAGO - UIC women's basketball (2-20, 1-16 Horizon) fell to the Detroit Mercy Titans (1-23, 1-16 Horizon), 63-61. The Flames fell in the final seconds on an inside shot from the Titans that sealed the Flames fate. Jaida McCloud recorded the fourth double-double of her career, scoring 19 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Leah Yarbrough put up a strong effort, notching a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds. UIC will head to Green Bay next on Thursday, Feb. 17.

The Flames came out of the gate struggling against the physicallity of the Titans early, falling behind 19-13 in the first quarter of play. The Flames swung the momentum back in their favor in the second quarter, holding the Titans to only five points. The Flames defense looked impressive in the second, forcing nine turnovers.

At the start of the second half, UIC fizzled against the physical offense of Detroit. UIC had several chances at the free throw line, drawing 14 foul shots, but were only able to convert seven. The Flames offense sputtered, shooting 30% from the floor on the quarter. UIC turned the ball over six times on the quarter and allowed Detroit Mercy to reclaim the lead.

The final quarter was a battle between the two team, going point for point. McCloud and Yarbrough continued to put up a concerted effort on offense, pulling the Flames ahead in the final seconds of play. With Detroit on the ropes, the Titans took a timeout and were able to get the ball with 8 seconds left. The Titans forced the ball inside and were able to convert with 0.2 seconds remaining, giving the Flames no chance for a jump shot. UIC lobbed the ball in to McCloud, but were unable to get a shot as time expired, falling 63-61.
